Attachments!

I apologize for taking the board offline this afternoon, but it was necessary to do so in order to add in the attachment mod... I'll describe this mod fully in the next post...

Okay...

You can include attachments in posts or private messages... There is a one megabyte limit to the attachment... If this is too small (!) let me know... You can attach almost anything, like images, binaries, documents and the like...

What this allows you to do is post images even if you do not have a hosting provider...

This mod is fully tested, but keep your eyes open for mistakes as it has a very complicated installation process and it is likely I may have made a mistake somewhere...

Now, a quick primer on file sizes...

Please do not post bitmap images... :)

Please do not post stuff that is insanely large unless you have a good reason... Big images mess up the tables and make the BBS hard to read...

A 640x480 JPG or GIF file is usually around 50 to 100 kilobytes...

If you need software for reducing or converting images, here is a good one that is free...

Just two more notes...

The Irfanview link posted above is a bit flaky... You might have to try it several times to get it to work... The file is also available from download.com so check there too...

I mentioned earlier that private messages have attachments also, but I have disabled that for now... If you have a serious need for this let me know... We have a finite amount of storage space and I'd rather use that for something everyone can benefit from...

Finally, I plan to install a mod "real soon now" that gives a "reason" when I take the BBS offline... This way, instead of getting the generic message you all saw today you will get one that is somewhat informative...

Looking at the list of what I can and cannot do at the bottom of the page in thread view, I see that in the Software forum I can delete my posts but I cannot attach files. In all the other forums it's the other way round; I cannot delete posts but I can attach files.

Is this a mistake?
