This thread has been here since October, and yet there are a good number of these exponents that don't seem to have been reserved. Am I the only one that finds that odd? Do people not realize that these are available, or is there something about the psychology of the average GIMPSer that I'm not understanding?

It shouldn´t be that difficult for you to understand, as you haven´t reserved any exponent either...

Seriously, I think most people prefer getting assignments from the server, in the automated way, and that´s why there so many still left in tha´s list.

Merry Christmas everybody!...

I am an utter newbie (8 hours and counting -- 0.89% on 32,540,461!), and even I am baffled by this.

Only reason I'm not jumping on this already is that I figure I ought to at least pay my dues with one exponent automatically assigned to me before I go for the gusto on the EFF prize... I would think everyone would jump at this opportunity...

What's the likelihood any of these will still go begging in 33 days?

Hard to say, but if we run out of 33,60x,xxx exponents I will add some 33,80x,xxx exponents which are only marginally higher.

For the record, these are exponents that were handed out manually a couple of years ago and results were never turned in. By handing them out once more we create a continuous range of results. The chance of finding a 10M digits prime statistically is a little higher when doing an exponent in the 33 million range than an exponent in the 40 million range.

Thanks for the info... I fired up the wife's DualCore laptop Saturday, which is doing P-1 on a 39MM right now. Assuming she doesn't complain too much about it (seems to be a noticeable perf hit), I'll try to get both processors running and take one of these for the 2nd processor.

Just curious --- why wouldn't these just go back in the pool to be assigned automatically? After all, my AMD Athlon 2.4GHz was assigned a 32MM exponent which is obviously well below current the leading edge, and even below the 10MM digit mark.

For two reasons. Even though the results should have been reported years ago, it would be nice but very time consuming if possible to find the original takers of these exponents. Second reason, in the pool some exponents would be assigned to stress testers so it would still take years before work would be started on each of them.

Which means you happened to have been assigned an exponent shortly after a successful cleanup on the server of overdue assignments. Just a couple of days before you would have been assigned a 40 million+ exponent.

Hmmmm... so am I to be commended for not just kicking it back and rolling the dice until I get something in the 10MM digit range, or would that be considered bad "PrimeNetiquette"? I'm not going to do that, just wondering what the norms of behavior are here...

Interestingly enough, on my wife's machine (Dual Core) I was given something in the 38.5MM range yesterday, while today I recruited my little brother into this lunacy and he was given a 20MM exponent... Now that's old!

Count me in for 33603337. I'll add the ETA once I get it.
