I'd suggest moving Math out of GIMPS and making it a topic or a division on its own. Much of the math discussed there isn't directly connected to GIMPS. Make it a topic under General, and then if later traffic warrants it, it can be made a division with separate forums for various things like Factoring.

I cant seem to split a topic in 15k.
There is no check box to choose, on others topics so that they can be split (moved) into the proper topics.
You should just be able to move topics inside the same forum, rather than just out. Maybe I just getting it wrong or something?....

TTn-

Look in the lower left hand corner of the topic, at the 4th icon... I *think* this is the link you want to click... (I rarely split topics!)

Ok, that gets to the same page, where there is no box to check/uncheck under select. Reading the moderator rules, it seems to be how one would move a topic to a properly oriented place.

For example a member keeps posting his/her primes each with a new topic.
How do I move these into our post primes topic?

Thanx ;)

I think you can only split topics, not merge them...

(Hey, if I knew what I was doing I wouldn't be here!) :)

It doesn't?

Bummer.

So much for my master plan to take control of all the pretty women in the world.

I liked the forum "look" the best when only 3 or 4, even 5, topics existed: the entire page fit on my screen. Convenient and least intimidating.

I like the idea of subforums, but looking at the phpbb demo forum and all the subforums, one could easily get lost is we don't structure it up front to be clean and simple.

At the top level, it may look like this:
- The BlabberHouseLounge
- All Topics GIMPS
- All Prime Topics non-GIMPS
- Nonsensical Things

Then for "Nonsensical Things" it would have subforums such as today's "Puzzle" but I would add "PC Games" "All Other Games." I think this is a good breakdown especially for "PC Games" since those of us that build our machines, we can discuss high performance video along with Prime95 high performance computations, etc.

"All Topics GIMPS" would be as they are today with the possible exception of Math (as Trif said earlier).

"All Prime Topics non-GIMPS" would contain "LMH" "15k Search" "NFSNET Disucssion" "3*2^n-1" " and "PSearch"

If we have a 6th subforum, the forum should be split creating a sub-subforum, *but* that is where we can start making it confusing (Danger Will Robsinson).
If we use subforums, here is a strawdog:

- Welcome to the GIMPSters (figure it out)
- The BlabberHouseLounge
- All Topics GIMPS
-----Software
-----Hardware
-----Server
-----Teams
- All Prime Topics non-GIMPS
-----Lone Mersenne Hunters
-----15k Search
-----NFSNET (not a NetworkFileSystem) Disucssion
-----3*2^n-1
-----PSearch
- Nonsensical Things
-----OS tips, tricks, and banter
-----Math
-----Puzzles
-----PC Games and Hardware
-----All Other Games

I'll leave more creative names to others.

So as moderators what should we do about this problem of having multiple topics named the same exact thing.
Since we cant do anything about multiple topics of the same overlapping idea. :)

edit
Actuall the latter is the key to efficiently moderating a forum, but alas.

Personally, I really like the forum the way it is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
