If you mobo fries (as mine did a while back), the floppy light could be on while the BIOS doesn't even post upon reset. Don't remember if the motor was running or not.

Well after all that, there must be gremlins in the machines, the computers have both been sitting the cases have not been opened for 8-10 weeks prior, the power cable fell out of the A: in one computer and the D: in the other computer. As I am a computer internal novice, it all appeared to be in order. When both computers being networked together both have disk errors at the same time, obvious thoughts would be a virus. However there must be a little gremlin.

Cables DO vibrate loose sometimes. One reason I usually like tight connectors - loose ones are easier to work with, but fall out a LOT more often.
