This has got me completely flummoxed. I am using exactly the same computer right now, and the Enter key works fine. But if I want to send a message to #rieselsieve in Gaim, everything seems to work except the Enter key. Not only that, but I've had times where I'm in Gaim, the Enter key doesn't work, I'll click on a window within the exact same instance of Gaim, and for that sub-window the Enter key will work fine. Not only that, but for the Window where 'Enter' doesn't work, pressing 'Ctrl-Enter', which starts a new line but doesn't send it to the channel until it gets 'Enter' on it's own, works fine.
I'm thinking it's the Dell keyboard, but I'm not sure. Edit: Okay, I've tried another keyboard, and it's the exact same problem. I'm using Feisty Fawn, which is Ubuntu, an "old" AMD cpu and 1 Gig of RAM. It would be a bit of an effort to get the exact specs. Last fiddled with by jasong on 2007-08-24 at 23:18 |

Simplify.
Is this behaivor only in Gaim? If so, is the "send" character set to be <ENTER>? Some people like to enter multiple lines at a time without having each line sent individually, and they set something else to be the "submit" key. |

We've only used Gaim a few times so we don't have a clue. We fired it up and looked at the preferences but nothing jumped out.
We can't picture using Gaim for IRC anyways, XChat is very clean and intuitive and has such a nice interface. |

Jason,
The setting for the "Send Message" function is under Code:
Preferences->Interface->Conversations->Shortcuts Xyzzy, The appeal (for me) of GAIM is the multiprotocol support. I am simultaneously logged in to at least 6 different networks, with multiple identities, all through on interface. Plus, it's basically the same interface under X as MS-Windows (same gtk prefs and everything). |

I figured it out(well, I actually had it explained to me).
When the Window name is in parentheses, it means that you are no longer present in that channel, IM session, etc.. You basically have to go to a different window, rejoin the channel, and go back. Since the input would go nowhere, I guess they thought it would be a good idea to disable the enter key so people wouldn't think they were actually accomplishing something. |
