There are ten apples in a basket and ten people in a room.
How do you give each person an apple and still leave one apple in the basket? |

Give one apple to nine of the ten people. Give the basket (which has the apple inside it) to the tenth person.

Absolutely correct.
And no controversies or weird math contributions. And I don't have to make the joke about generalizing to N apples, do I? |
