Today's stage finish has an amusing English translation.

Ah Ernst I detect the note of bitterness in your posts that is reserved for the spurned fan. Can't resist this: I told you so! Now can we stop calling LA the greatest American cyclist and revert it back to where it belongs: Monsieur Le Mond.

For me it is not just the doping that rankles but the omertà that he enforced so strictly and how he destroyed the careers and reputations of those who dared to stand up to him. He basically got Trek to threaten LeMond to shut up or they would terminate the partnership to make the LeMond brand of bikes.

If there is one hero in this story it is LeMond. Walk no run and read Paul Kimmage's interview of him in The Times "Cycle of abuse". He just ones across as such a decent Humble yet fearless and courageous man.

Re. what happened in yesterday's 1st big Pyreneean mountain stage: Tacky, very tacky.

Barring catastrophe, looks like the UK will have its first TdF winner - and defending champ Evans will need to some luck just to make the podium.

I saw live almost of the stage and I hate when the climb is not at the end of the stage. Being at ~40 km from the end it was just a boring stage, it ruins the show. I was hoping for Paulinho's victory but the attack from the last 10 km of Sánchez was just devastating.

Tomorrow's stage 16 is another monster-climb stage (Aubisque/Tourmalet/Peyresourde) ruined by a downhill run into the finish. What's the point of the mountains in such a stage? To create fake drama in which the large trailing grupetto of sprinters and the injured/sick 'try desperately' to beat the easily-waived cutoff?

Frank Schleck out due to banned something-or-other.

Currently watching a pre-Olympic documentary on Victoria Pendleton.

I had the pleasure/priviledge of coaching an (exceptionally good) U16 crew
at the National School rowing championships in Nottingham.

It was blowing a gale (as usual).

Having won through to the final, the boat was half full of water.

The "seven" man said he wanted to get back to London that evening because he had a party to go to.

I said "I'll give you a lift to the station if you win".

"No probs Doc" he replied.
They won the final, broke the record, and I drove him to the station.

Default Blind Faith...

As a stickler for "Health and efficiency safety",
I am somewhat alarmed by the tour de France.
The spectators' confidence in cyclists' ability to avoid obstacles while doing 40(?)mph is only matched by that of the golf spectators' faith in the reliability of not getting a mis-cueid tee shot where it hurts.

D

PS And I haven't started on the cricket yet.
