another way is a way to mute the ringer on the phone. it cost a lot less except time to press the button ( the hang up button on my phone if you haven't picked up).

More likely, in this "modern age", the call centers are using SIP VoIP trunks.

I used to annoy the CTO of a local carrier by using his DID when I called him (or his bosses) until he finally realized he should configure his telephony switch to not trust what his clients' kit tell his kit is the calling number....

There are "Do not call" lists that one can sign up for free. This service does not claim to stop political calls, but does claim to stop non-profit calls.

That seems kinda backwards to me. At least non-profits (hopefully/theoretically) have decent intentions.

Nonprofits never call you, only telemarketing firms operating on their behalf (and taking 40% or more of every dollar you send them).

I know that https://www.donotcall.gov/ exists, but it is only for telemarketers. Various states have their own lists, but I suspect they also are to stop telemarketers as well.
