( its actually a liniux boot disk that will load something and run it with out a hdd)

Now, no backup files of the run in progress can be made if the computer is set up this way, correct?

Using a "Live CD" (Or methods similar to one) is hardly revolutionary...
You can back the save files up over the network, or you could use a pen drive or anything really... You could even, with a sufficiently reliable computer that has a power backup, save to a RAM disk... The question isn't, "Can we?"... The question is, "Is it worth the trouble?" Only you can answer that! |

Wouldn't work to do backup files to a floppy - the work-in-process files won't *fit* on a floppy (at least if you're doing LL work, they're typically 7 Meg or thereabouts each on my clients).
Would work to use a LAN-connected machine, though. I put together a single-floppy Distributed.Net setup under LINUX once, using muLinix as the base - can't manage that with mPrime, 'cause the program size alone is too large and the single-foppy distributions don't tend to have the library(ies) mprime needs, or a recent enough kernel version in some cases. Something like the LinuxCare/Linux BBC distribution on CD would be workable, given the use of a HD on a machine accesses via LAN. I wouldn't *trust* a RAM drive for LL work around here - we get too many "extended" power outages long enough to run out most of my UPSs - and once in a long while a REALLY long (6+ hours) outage that would even run out the UPS I have my server on. Wouldn't be a big deal for a factoring-only machine, though, unless it's VERY slow.... 'course, at that point you might as well start looking at going driveless workstation with something like the Linux Terminal Project.... |

Prime is a very nice client to run on diskless node, but you do need somewhere to store intermediate results. It is feasable to do it with a ramdisk, but one time or another you would lose quite a lot of data, be it caused by a powerbreak, a need to upgrade the client, the os or whatever.
Having a server on the network and using shared disks, like NFS or SMB, would solve that problem. One server could easily support up to 50 nodes. If you get to that level you ought to have a pretty good backup system for the server filesystem. Running from floppy is not possible - unless you want to run around changing them quite often. The exponents I am running at the moment generate 7MB backup files... heretic |
