If you have another computer available, put this hard drive as the secondary master in the other computer. This will allow you to look at the hard drive without changing jumpers on it.

Boot up the other computer, go into the bios and see if the bad(?) hard drive can be detected. This helps you to make a determination about the other motherboards IDE controllers.

If possible, check out the old hard drive. If you can read files and folders, then the hard drive is not necessarily bad. It might have been the motherboard.

If you try this, let us know what happens.

I might try it tonight. If I do, I'll tell you about it tomorrow. But the computer knew the maker and BIOS, stuff like that, so does that mean it's not dead?

Well, that should mean that the CPU and BIOS and stuff are OK, but the Hard Drive couls still be quite dead.

Ok, I got pretty far but I needed to stop for a moment. I couldn't find the hard drive in the other computer, do you think it is under the CD drive? (It's an old Gateway desktop, Model No. BABY AT)

Sure, just look through the whole case until you find it.

Follow the ribbon cables. One of them has to go to the hard drive.

The other hard drive uses ribbon and power cords unlike the broken one that just plugs in. I could try Rescue Disks from Norton AntiVirus.

Is the hard drive that you talk about that only has one connection plug into the front of your case, and is about five inches wide? If that's true, it is probably a converter to make a regular hard drive removable. If it is, you can take off the converter case to get to a regular hard drive with a seperate ribbon and power connector.

It said not to open it or I would void my warranty.

Ohhhh, alrighty then.

We've determined that the hard drive most probably isn't working, so you should contact the manufacturer for warranty service

Well anyway, at least I fixed my CD drive on the other computer.

You can check out my exponent on the broken one. It was DoubleCheck= 9027259,64,1 and I got about 12% done with it. Therefore you might be able to skip something that I don't know about. Everything was working fine on that computer so don't hesitate to skip if necessary. Just post it as a reply on here and you can put it on to the worktodo.ini file. PM me when you finish and cut and paste the results.txt file so I can turn it in.

Thanks,
