which version of the software can I use?

The software you use depends upon what project you want to work on and what you want to do on that project.

That's if they wants something already built. If they want to build it themselves (using the Terminal app), then they have a number of choices, but it really depends upon what project they want to work on and what they want to do as part of that project. For almost any project mentioned on mersenneforum, they can d/l the source and built it themselves. They might need a little help, but it can be done.

Prime95.exe (Windows version of the Mersenne Prime finding program)
runs using either Boot Camp or Parallels

maybe it will run using CrossOver Mac, a commercial Wine based program,
it works without Windows unlike Boot Camp or Parallels.
