Yep. So help me. It came in twisted and I didn't get it straightened. In midlife, my dentist reshaped it to match up better with the lower tooth. At some point the root engaged in internal resorption, and the tooth was just hanging in the gum. One day it just came out.

Yeah. It worked OK for a long time, but then it just gave up. No infection or pain.

Ugh... I'm getting laid off again.

Several projects at my company have been canceled or put on hold as an indirect result of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was recently informed that I'm affected by a reduction in force and will be let go in mid-October unless I can secure an internal transfer. Hunting for a new job during this time is going to be a nightmare.

My laptop died.

The sicker on the base indicates a manufacture date of 24 Sept 2009 so it has had a good long life.

Going into town shortly to get a replacement.

Ubuntu installed now and current task is restoring my home filesystem from backups.

After having suffered some major data loss - nothing catastrophic, but whole carefully-set-up-over-years work-related software infrastructure took months to restore, partly because it relied on an old-but-fast-and-stable version of MacOS - when my first vintage-2009 Macbook classic's HD died a few years back - I have since set up an external-SSD for monthly backups, mnemonic for these is "write your monthly rent check while you back up". Never used Apple's Time Machine, rather I use the not-quite-free-but-worth-it Carbon Copy Cloner utility, which creates a bootable backup, i.e. if the still-old-style-spinning HD I set up to replace the borked one dies, it's a matter of minutes to swap in the external one and boot from that - I've tried it to make sure it worked as advertised.

I may switch the 2 drives soon anyway, because I'm getting sick of the slowness of booting and coming-out-of-hibernation using the spinning HD.

Anyhow, Paul, good luck with the -in your best Colin-Clive-1930s-horror-classic voice - "it's alive!" revivification thing.

Do you know which part failed?

I'm assuming it was the hard drive.
