My days of PowerPC seem to have passed me by. My quad core G5 has been acting flaky recently and I suspect it is time to be put to pasture.
It is possible that it requires an inexpensive repair (new memory, bad hard drive), but it could also be something more expensive (power supply, logic board). If the repair is inexpesive (< $200), I will most likely do it. On the bright side I hope to convince my wife to let me buy a used 4 core or 8 core Mac Pro. The funny thing is that I had just talked to her about it two weeks ago, shortly before this started to happen. |

I was recently informed that wanting to be inside a person DOESN'T mean wanting to know their deepest thoughts and feelings. Should be easier to get a second date now.
just kidding. Got that one-liner from a youtube channel I just subscribed too. andypandy311 . It's awesomely nerdy. Though I have to admit I've only seen the one video. |

Reno residents had a very bad night......imagine waking up to this outside your window:
Had something similar to this happen 2 years ago: someone a couple hundred yards behind me managed to start a fire that came down and burned down the fences on 3 sides of where I am.....missed the house by yards, thank goodness. My heart goes out to these folks. Latest report is 2000+ acres, 20 structures destroyed. Last fiddled with by schickel on 2011-11-18 at 21:59 Reason: Teh internets ate my vowel! |

I lost my job on Friday. Not because I didn't meet my company's expectations, but because my manager didn't have enough funds to continue my contract. The economy is brutal these days. Although my exit from Cisco was very graceful, it still kind of stinks to become unemployed just before Christmas.
In the context of GIMPS, there is another downside. One nice thing about my group is that there was no policy against running foreign software on company computers. As such, I took the liberty of installing Prime95 on a few servers and workstations that were rarely used by others. A couple of co-workers did complain about the program using up resources, in which case I gave them permission to kill it as work is of higher priority. Still, it was really fun to put those 8-core IBM servers to good use; I certainly regret not being aware of those machines until a couple of months ago. But since I was leaving the company, I decided to remove Prime95 altogether because I don't think it was a good idea to keep running the program on computers that I would no longer have access to. Truth be told, it's kind of saddening to see my average throughput drop from a potential 300 GHz-days/day to a measly 3 GHz-days/day. Not to mention that I still haven't discovered M48... The same thing happened to my brother a few years back. They shut down an entire plant and put about 100 out of work just before Christmas. |

The good news is that you're eligible for unemployment benefits (since it's a layoff vs. a firing), and there has been absolutely no better time in history than now to be so. You can take the time to look for something that suits you well, and who knows, is a step up from where you were. You mentioned that you were under a contract - isn't there some sort of penalty or legal action for breach of contract available to you? Normally, you can't just sign contracts and then just say "sorry, I can't pay you anymore"... |

More likely, the contract was coming to an end, and they couldn't get the funds to renew the contract. Sorry to hear about your job loss (and GIMPS's loss).
