It is snowing like crazy in Chicago. Forecast has it continuing until 7PM, at least. The forecast laughably suggests that we might get an inch accumulation. We've scraped that much off the car to get to the grocery, and an equal amount when we left the store.

Three inches of heavy, wet snow had fallen as of 1 p.m., with about another inch expected to accumulate into Sunday evening, National Weather Service Meteorologist Charles Mott said.

Sunday’s snow was enough to cause headaches, but will not come close to April’s single-day accumulation record of 9.4 inches, Mott said.

That high mark was set April 2, 1975, and again on April 5, 1982.

I witnessed the April 1975 one firsthand, and remember seeing the 1982 "April Fooey" blizzard reported on TV, from a safe distance.

Sad day in Paris. That wooden roof sounds like it was a tinderbox; when they rebuild I expect they will rethink that, or at least replace it with something original-looking but having more fire resistance.

It was. But it was built something like 100 years ago, out of wood. Few expected it to have lasted as long as it did.

Very likely. Modern materials are much more resistant to fire.

The devastating part of this is what was lost from inside. Memories... Books... Records...

Without meaning to come across as flippant, "off-site backups" only deals with bits, not atoms...

Oh of my colleague mentioned it in the lounge and I responded with

"oh is it some important building? why is it on fire global warming?"

and everyone starred at me like they're in misbelief. How embarrassing, or maybe I should have read more wikipedia page about euro history.
