What would you do if they made money their gift to you? Burn it? Or would that tell you their praise was "sincere?" (Alas, I do know examples of this sort of thinking, if "thinking" is the right word...) I offer, for your edification, and perhaps the amusement of others, a poem we read in a high school English Literature class many moons ago: The Glove and the Lions KING Francis was a hearty king, and loved a royal sport, And one day, as his lions fought, sat looking on the court. The nobles filled the benches, with the ladies in their pride, And 'mongst them sat the Count de Lorge, with one for whom he sighed: And truly 'twas a gallant thing to see that crowning show, Valor and love, and a king above, and the royal beasts below. Ramped and roared the lions, with horrid laughing jaws; They bit, they glared, gave blows like beams, a wind went with their paws; With wallowing might and stifled roar they rolled on one another, Till all the pit with sand and mane was in a thunderous smother; The bloody foam above the bars came whisking through the air; Said Francis then, "Faith, gentlemen, we're better here than there." De Lorge's love o'er heard the King, a beauteous lively dame, With smiling lips and sharp bright eyes, which always seemed the same; She thought, The Count my lover is brave as brave can be; He surely would do wondrous things to show his love of me; King, ladies, lovers, all look on; the occasion is divine; I'll drop my glove, to prove his love; great glory will be mine. She dropped her glove, to prove his love, then looked at him and smiled; He bowed, and in a moment leaped among the lions wild: The leap was quick, return was quick, he has regained his place, Then threw the glove, but not with love, right in the lady's face. "By Heaven," said Francis, "rightly done!" and he rose from where he sat; "No love," quoth he, "but vanity, sets love a task like that." -- James Leigh Hunt |

The NVidia GTX460 in my elderly machine (and the one on which I am typing) has a dying fan. which works only if the box is turned upside down, I purchased a GTX 1060 a week or so and rebuilt the system today. That is when I discovered that the motherboard supports at most PCI-2 and the graphics card has a PCI-3 interface.
Entirely my own fault but the situation must be resolved. Likelihood is that a new system will be purchased with PCI-3 and no graphics card so other components can be transferred. |

I took SWMBO to A&E at 5am yesterday. She had dislocated her right shoulder. The X-ray was quite impressive.
Six weeks in a sling and physiotherapy has been prescribed. |

Ouch!! I have come very close to dislocating my shoulder(maybe it just popped back in) and it was exceedingly painful. Hope it fixes itself and it doesn't happen again.

The (much less severe) shoulder troubles I've had took some time to heal, and I just had to take it easy till they did. It's a real test of patience. The most acute bout happened when my foot slipped on a carpeted tread, and I started to surf down a flight of stairs. I managed to grab the edge of the floor as it went by. It stopped my descent, but I felt my shoulder stretch significantly more than it should. After getting vertical again, I muttered, "That's probably going to hurt tomorrow." It did -- and for weeks after. I used that shoulder mighty gingerly in the interim... |

Sigh... I've been resisting it for years, but I've finally been forced to join the "WhatsApp" universe...
Installed the App on my Andriod phone... Launched it... Actually read all the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy language, rather than just clicking through like most people. Was informed that the app will share information about me with FB "for my benefit, like better ads!"... Sigh... Entered my phone number; ~5 seconds later received the confirming SMS message, which the App intercepted itself (since I had given it permissions to access the telephony APIs), and I was all set up! I have to admit the easy of joining is impressive. I did try running the App with most permissions disabled. But I tried to "start a chat" with someone I know who I know is on WA, and (critically) their associated phone number. No dice... Finally I surrendered, and gave permission for the App to read all my contacts (and, of course, all of THEIR phone numbers...). Only then was I able to use the App; I had hoped it would have been possible to create connections manually, without have to release this much (to some, sensitive) information. But, as they say: "If you're not paying for it, YOU become the product. Last fiddled with by chalsall on 2019-01-27 at 21:58 Reason: s/but I'v/but I've/; |
