Indeed. Two close friends were holidaying there. Thankfully they chose today to visit Turin and have messaged they are ok. Many have not been so fortunate.

Brings back memories. Around 7 or 8 years ago, I accidently cut myself while misusing a big chef's knife. Luckily, no tendon damage, but I needed several stitches. It was in a bad place, right at a joint, so after the stitches came out, the joint had to be partially immobilized and "buddy taped" to the next finger. One office visit later, it was down to partial immobilization with bandages, and a program of rehab exercises.

The doctor remarked that it wouldn't be good to immobilize the joint too long. I chimed in, "Yeah, it'll get stuck that way." The doctor smiled, turned to his assistant, and said, "He knows." And, coincidentally, he gave me a really nice discount for the office visit

It took a while to regain full mobility in that joint. Apparently when tendons and ligaments aren't stretched, they contract and, as you say, "freeze up."

Glad that they are fine. So far 35 people were confirmed dead, but the number will rise.

Also, on Sunday an pier collapsed in Spain. Over 300 people were hurt; only 9 needed to stay into an hospital. No one died, it could have ended worse...

The pier collapsed while the ending of an concert.

So, a client of mine had a failing hard drive. (In a RAID1 configuration.)

Went down to the local kit provider and purchased a brand new 2TB hard drive.

Turned out the provider had previously opened the packaging around the drive, found it faulty, and then stapled it closed and sold it to me as new.

Amazingly I went up the email chain to get to the GM and he said "Yeah. That's what we do now. Most people don't notice.

I don't understand how "most people don't notice" a drive is faulty?

Also, why sell known faulty gear? That is just asking for trouble.

If they deploy the drive months after purchase, perhaps their own people damaged the kit.

So it was tested faulty and the original purchaser cum non-purchaser bought another. Still doesn't explain their decision to sell it when they knew it was faulty. They admitted they tested it, so they knew.

But anyhow, that explanation sounds like bovine to me. They need to think it through more to make sure their lies are at least plausible.

Now back in the UK, which is not particularly bad in itself. Unfortunately a shipment of our household stuff, computers, telescopes, etc is also in the UK. It should have arrived in La Palma in early August. Looks like being November before we see it all again.

Perhaps what most people don't notice is that the packaging on a hard drive offered as new, had actually been opened before sale. Including, apparently, chalsall. Understandable -- I mean, who would think to look for tampering with the packaging of a "new" hard drive? Simply a "failure of imagination," now corrected by experience. I don't think the drive being faulty is something that would normally be apparent by visual inspection. It would only become evident when you try to use it.

The GM already explained that: "Most people don't notice." That makes it all right, don't you see? If they don't notice the package was opened before sale, the supplier is off the hook.

What I'm puzzled about is, why the supplier bothered opening the package at all. I mean, if they were going to sell it regardless, why bother finding out the thing is faulty? If they'd simply passed it on as they got it from the manufacturer, they could truthfully say they didn't know it was faulty.
