Codeine has a lot of side effects. I didn’t take it after my surgery.

The last time I got codeine prescribed/used (after my wisdom teeth were removed) I could barely stand because of the nausea.
Needless to say I stopped taking them and took normal paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Only if it is a chronic condition.

A good friend of ours went up to Canada for open heart surgery.

We just learned that she is not expected to wake up.

That's really hard. Surgery didn't go well? Here's hoping she surprises the experts.

Thanks. But statistically, she won't. One in a million chance.

She's already effectively brain dead.

Her blood brain barrier failed.

Argh! Did that translate into cerebral hemorrhage? (Sorry for being so detail oriented.) My sincere condolences.

We don't have a lot of the details. And I was similarly analytical (while crying a whole lot).

I don't think this would be like a stroke, but rather a slow death of the whole brain.

The good news is she probably has no cognitive abilities. So she will feel no pain, nor be "trapped".

The bad news is at some point a decision will have to be made.

Thank you. I will pass those on.

She was given a bad hand early in life, and just laughed it all off.

That sounds a lot like Frida Kahlo, in her approach to a difficult (painful) life.
