I hit the end of my left thumb with a hatchet two nights ago when chopping kindling for the fire. SWMBO bound it up and sent me off to A&E (I believe it's called ER in the US) yesterday morning for attention. A roughly 4-hour stay involved tetanus injections, complete local anaesthetic of the thumb, carving out a chunk of nail with a scalpel, removal of a lump of wood and then five stitches to re-attach the top 4mm of what was left of my thumb to the remaining and substantially larger portion. About the only good thing is that I insist on keeping a sharp axe and so the cut was most remarkably clean and precise with no crushing visible at all. Life. Don't talk to me about life.  (A realistic representation now that it's three times the normal diameter because of all the bandages.)

Though you did exactly what Father Sergius did, your motivation was arguably different.
(Wikipedia's account of the short story lacks fine details, but he did it exactly with a axe.)

My workplace is under an evacuation order, due to a wind driven fire. Some parts of the site have suffered damage. 9 years ago we lost buildings, vehicles, and various other infrastructure and equipment. I am safe and away from the fire. Holding my breath, waiting to see what has been lost.
