Default speed of various programs for different primes

Hi,
could anyone tell me which program is the fatest for which primes and what not.
What makes a program faster than the others!
(compared to primeform and proth.exe)
I have also read that it is much more easier in terms of computer time to proove merseene primes than proth primes or other ones of the same size. could some one explain why it is so?

Thanks!

The fastest program availble for testing Mersenne numbers to see if they are prime is Prime95. This program only works with an x86 processor on the Windows platform, so if you're working on a Mac or in UNIX, you will need mlucas or glucas. These programs aren't quite as fast, but are still fast.

Mersenne numbers are quick to test because the Lucas-Lehmer test is used, which is very fast. You can learn more about it here: http://www.utm.edu/research/primes/n...casLehmer.html

For more discussion about why Prime95 on x86 is faster than other Mersenne software on other CPUs, see the earlier "Other mersenne progs, why so slow?" thread in this forum at http://www.mersenneforum.org/viewtop...?t=439&start=0

The part about x86 is true, but of course we have prime95-based clients for Linux, FreeBSD, and OS/2 in addition to Windoze.
