Ok I got the app up and running, are there already some primes found?
Where can we see the results? Thx |

I downloaded and installed BOINC but I can't see the "view or edit" and the primegrid preferences... (I inserted the url : www.primegrid.com ; is it correct or I should insert "http://www.primegrid.com" (without quotes) ? Last fiddled with by pacionet on 2006-11-15 at 14:01 |

I'm still working on returned result validation and automatic checking for primes; should be done today.
pacionet: once you install BOINC you should be presented with a window offering to attach to a project. There you input www.primegrid.com (with or without http://, does not matter), create a new user account and get some work from the standard PG app because the server does not recognise you to be a beta tester yet (that should be only one workunit, which takes about 25 minutes, so i don't think it's a big problem to get one or two in the beginning). Then you should go to PrimeGrid website, log in and you will find general BOINC settings (like, run when on battery or not, run when idle, etc) and project specific preferences. There you will find the option to run test applications. On the next connection BOINC will fetch work for LLR (if it is present; if not, it will fall back to the older PG app named primegen). If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. |

Rytis, I've visited your web site. I'll try to be gentle and tactful.
You will not crack any of the RSA challenge numbers by finding smaller prime numbers. You will not crack them using any trial division algorithm. You owe your primegrid users the assurance that they are not contributing their CPU cycles in vain. You are obviously a gifted programmer. I very strongly urge you to consider making the twin prime search using LLR the only application available using primegrid. Such a project has a concrete and achievable goal. When it completes you can immediately fire up a hunt for an even bigger world record twin prime. Once you have LLR up and running, the Mersenneforum community could easily come up with a dozen other worthwhile math and prime related projects for you to consider. You know, I have always stated that cracking RSA numbers is NOT the primary goal. The goal was to implement server side system. And, well, you need something to test with :)
Anyway, I could probably have started doing "useful" (if prime number searches can be called that) with prime search since the very beginning, but I lacked knowledge (and still I have very little background on mathematics). To let you know shortly about my background, I am 19 year old first-year student in the local university, studying business management. Little relation to mathematics and none with computer science. Since the beginning the project was doing complete rubbish work, making apps of an always increasing complexity. I started with an extremely simple app that tried to bruteforse fixed-length MD5 string. Now with primegen app we at least do something useful. All in all, this all prime number stuff is nothing useful :) And at least, this isn't trial division... I know BOINC project that does that :( Still, why do you think I am going to help TPS with LLR? Because I don't want to completely waste the time. Ugh, I got carried away. :) But thanks for your comments, prime95. Now, about the progress on LLR: I think I've got pretty much everything done. I even got a nice little status page at http://www.primegrid.com/orig/range_grid.php :) Unprepared tasks means that it hasn't been yet inserted into the main database and are not being sent to users. I don't send all at once because I don't want to flood the server, I had bad experience with that before. Instead I do it manually (for now). If everything goes OK, I'll make it automated tomorrow. |

Rytis , I think that it would be better if a user can see the LLR residue at the end of each computation (like LLR.exe) to know if some number is prime or not, because he is the finder and, in my opinion, should be the first to know.

Maybe mprime, 321 and other primesearching projects could, also gain access to rytis database, if they decided to ask kindly, actually this might be the first or near first step in the row of the many steps, which brings us GIMPS go BOINC :) Regards! |

Well, my daily job (I work two days/week, when I don't have lectures) actually is programming ;) I create accounting software for a local company.
pacionet: done :) You can view every result and see if it yielded prime or not in the detailed result page (IE, http://www.primegrid.com/orig/result...ultid=4411853). I could probably make a table page listing all primes that the user has found, but that's going to be very problematic with the design of BOINC system, as I have to do lookups on huge tables. I think we'll have to wait a little for user-specific stats (probably until the weekend ;)). |

Rytis but when LLR will be completely active, can we choose to run LLR or primegen in the client ?

Yes, there will be application selector (not done yet :)).
