Hi everybody! This question might have been asked before, but I can't find it, so I'm asking it for myself.
This are my computer specs: DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D AMD Athlon64 3700+ San Diego KAB2E 0607GPEW @ 2200 MHz (11x200, 1.312v) G.Skill Extreme Series F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ DDR 500 2x1GB @ 3-4-4-8 1T 1:1 200 MHz Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 550W Windows XP Pro SP2 It should also be overclocked within a few weeks. Now what type of work should I let Prime95 request from PrimeNet? And how much RAM should I give it? |

I'd suggest first time primality testing. As for the memory, I'm not sure and I'll let someone else answer you. I know there's a table somewhere saying how much memory it should need during P-1 Stage 2 (the only, short, part that needs alot of memory), but I can't remember where it is.

Single 10M digit number would take you ~35 days to complete on your machine, so I would stick to double-checking or first-time tests given there are still some exponents with less than 10M digits available. Finally you may consider trial factoring assignments.

OK, thanks. I selected 'numbers to double-check' and 'numbers to factor'. How much RAM should I make available?

You could give it say 1500 MB (if you have got 2 GB).
It is probably unimportant for you. This memory is only used in stage 2 of the so called P-1 factoring. If you are only doing double-checks, the P-1 factoring has already been done when the exponent was tested the first time (in most cases). If you later try first-time tests, you should set the memory so you leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs you use. Then give the rest to Prime95. But if you set it too high, Prime95 will slow down tremendously (during stage 2 of P-1). Also, increasing the memory from 8 MB to 500 MB helps Prime95 a lot, but further increasing memory from 500 MB to 1500 MB gives little extra. |
