Well it´s an abbreviation for the 'Hitlergruß' - the thing Cartmanmade in the Halloween southpark episode. The 88 is the same presentation in numbers.
It´s really interesting because character kombination like SS or KZ are forbidden in Germany (for obvious reasons) ;=). |

hi!
IIRC(!!!) those "HH", "KZ", "SS", "HJ"(???) are forbidden since a few years. Before that it was only a "should not use" but sometimes the authority for the license plates did it wrong. Some people like to have their initials on the license plate and if someones name is e.g. "Hans Huhn" and the authority was sleeping it's possible to have "HH"... For those who don't know how the german license plates look like: black letters/numbers on white ground. format (for every day usages, no specials): "AAA - BB - 1234" AAA is somewhat special (compared to other european license plates, I don't know about other continents). The letters before the first "-" are the origin. (Berlin is "B", Hamburg is "HH", Munich is "M", there are several hundred of them for each city/region!) BB: one or two "random" letters, some combinations are not allowed here. 1234: one to four "random" digits, ne leading zeros for every day license plates. You can choose the "BB - 1234" part as you wish (if it's free). As you may have noticed: Hamburg has "HH" all the time... (HH = "Hansestadt Hamburg", a single "H" is reserved for the smaller city "Hannover") Regards, TheJudger |

Obviously you don´t want to choose something which is very well remembered. Otherwise every idiot can get you for a red traffic light.

I've seen M11NUS before. Obviously they couldn't get hold of M1NUS.

And a lot of personalised plates are shorter than that: I have seen some with only 3 characters. Quote:

This is not really new, but I didn't know, maybe you will find it interesting, too.
All new registrants in DC get these plates (see bottom) -- |
