Nice truck, Xyzzy...

I had a beautiful Chevy Silverado until last summer when our baby came... because of New Mexico's child safety seat requirements, I had to trade it in - I got a Matrix, a great car, but I still miss my truck....

Prices in Portugal, as of 01APR08:

95 octane ~1.38 eur/litre (~7,5 US dollar/gallon)
98 octane ~1.52 eur/litre (~8 US dollar/gallon)
Diesel slightly cheaper.

American folks, do not complain...
LOL

It's in our genes to complain about things that we must "endure" which are vastly better than virtually everyone else in the world. <sigh>

Well, $5 gas burned at the rate a typical US roadhog uses is more painful than $8 a gallon in a 1L-engined Euromini - but that's the point, isn't it? Only severe and prolonged pocketbook pain will induce U.S. consumers to make a large-scale switch to fuel-efficient vehicles.

Alas, we have way too much collective wealth to make that actually occur, and the price of gas is still comparatively low. The more I ran the numbers on my commuting options for my recent job offer decision, the more I realized that the cost of gas really just didn't matter all that much.

OT: Xyzzy, you can get 93 octane gas???
I think we can get 94 octane at one station, and you can always go to the airport to get higher octane gas, or buy racing fuel.

Trivia tidbit: Higher octane gas has less energy per gallon than lower octane gas. All more octane does is slow the burning of the air/gas mixture, which retards the timing.

We spent a while finding the right combination of gas and modifications to get a ping-free and towing-friendly setup. Engines today have anti-knock sensors and can retard or advance ignition to help with pinging but sometimes they cannot adjust enough.

We put in plugs that are 2 steps colder, which lowers the combustion chamber temperature about 100°C and we dialed back the timing with our tuner 1 degree. Now we can run just about any gas out there. The tuner we use allows us to adjust the shift points, shift line pressures and all sorts of other variables.

We've played with a lot of the parameters and have finally found a setup that is near perfect. (Some setups wouldn't even start the engine!)

The best part is the tuner removes all the "torque control" that Ford builds in, so there is no hesitation when you accelerate. (The F-150 uses a "fly-by-wire" accelerator pedal and the pedal travel to throttle position ratio is nowhere close to linear.)

PWN is often used in gaming for OWN (to win/beat/be better than someone).

While involved in Japanese studies, I stepped outside a movie theater with a woman I'd met in a Japanese class to almost immediately see a beautiful Japanese-made car -- we simultaneously exclaimed the the license plate: KIREI

Last fiddled with by only_human on 2008-04-15 at 00:07 Reason: oops: KIREI (beautiful) added and removed 2nd I at end of word---it's been many years since these classes
