The aim of the project is to find all the generalized binary number systems up to dimension 11.

The above quote is listed as the goal for SZTAKI Desktop Grid, which is a BOINC project. The link to the Wiki entry that is supposed to explain it is here.

If it's possible for someone who knows College Algebra to understand this stuff, could someone either explain it, or supply a link? I suppose I could do a search on binary number systems, but if someone has better search terms, I'd appreciate them.

On the Unofficial BOINC Wiki page you linked, there is, in the "Also See" section, a link (http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/szdg/desc_numsys_es.php) to the "Technical Paper" that describes the BinSYS Project and explains generalized n-dimensional binary number systems.

Hint: matrices. "The base is now a matrix and the digits are vectors."

BTW, there is a connection to Mandelbrot sets.
