Oh yes ! I'm kind of stupid ! That's the same for bases 32 and 64 ! So we could use bases 17 or 31 !!!! Very nice !

Here was my suggestion to Richard Crandall about this - I first suggested fixing the font and height and simply increasing the width (or going to a multi-panel deal) several years ago. Note that I think for sentimental and historical reasons people are going to always want a decimal printout. I know, mathematically speaking it's silly, but OTOH it does give one a visceral sense of the relative sizes of the record primes (at least if one keeps the font size constant).

Hi, Richard:

Have you given any thought to my earlier suggestion to at some point (pardon the pun) fix the font, and from then on keep (say) height of the posters constant and simply increase the width as needed? Future Mersenne prime posters might someday need be stored as large scrolls - almost like sacred biblical texts. ;)

Harder ! express it in base M43 !!! 1 symbol to invent ! (but you'll have to change them it if M43 is in fact M44 or M45 and that would be embarassing.... )

1 should be ok...

Last fiddled with by Phil MjX on 2006-09-12 at 20:53 Reason: I am wrong with the fact that it will have only 1 and 1 symbols?

And what about my third proposal ?

- a picture of Mersenne monk, of E. Lucas, and of D. Lehmer,
- the name and signatures of discoverers and of George, and maybe verifiers
- the list of all previous Mersenne primes, plus "who discovered which and when".
- a log graph showing the progression of Mersenne primes
- a time graph showing when Mersenne primes appeared since the beginning.

This way, people will stop asking me why I've bought a gray poster and if it is modern art !!

I like the fact of seeing "concretely" a part of infinity (i.e. the largest known prime) as I would like to see a deep sky map, covered with stars and galaxies...
Maybe coloured fonts (six colors, decimal output = sexagesimal) would be nice...

Base 62 is easy and relatable: 0,1...9,A,B..Z,a,b..z
Just the need for a font that make 0,O and 1,l clear would be important.

It would prevent from resorting to symbols, like % ^ & # [ \

Why not in hyroglyphs?

I agree with ewmayer, or think that his idea is the best. Although much of the additional information that Tony brought up would be a nice addition to the posters, I think that people will (like ewmayer said) always want a decimal expansion of the number. Since the poster space is limited, keep the font size constant, but just lengthen or widen the poster as needed for each new prime.
