Moo,

According to Anandtech/dailytech, AMD plans to reduce its single/dualcore processors further when Conroe launches 24 July.

So I would hold off buying until early August. Some of the drops are up to about 50%.

I'd love to spend my money on a Linux box, but are any of these worthwhile?

Better question: Does anyone know of a website where someone systematically collected benchmarks for different processors and different DC apps?

dnet has some for the RC5 and OGR projects.

That's very helpful. Thank you. Question, though: I'm not familiar with the basic function of the programs. Is there a place on the site that gives a general description of what each program does and why some processors are better than others? For instance, in the case of Prime95's main project, I'm thinking the important thing would be cache-size and the ability to flush and reload the L2 cache as quickly as possible. For other projects it's other factors. Can anyone shed some light on this or give me a link?(I've tried benchmark searches and mostly got crap which I think had something to do with insurance or something)

it's amazing the "3200+" has a higher price tag than it had in 2004. What are people thinking buying this stuff?

I'd be looking towards performance in 64 bit mode, and supporting hardware virtualisation.

However, for some older comparisons www.swox.org/gmp ie the gmp maths library people did some benchmarking on different architectures.

The gmpbench utility and results are downloadable from their site.

http://www.swox.com/gmp/gmpbench.html

They also wrote this paper
