Well, I have Windows 98 SE at home, and it works OK. I don't want to pay a lot of dollars only to see a pretty desktop.

Most Linux distributions only offer you to download the latest version. This of course have serious drawbacks, like losing much functionality when the underlying kernel changes.
For example, all kernels 2.6.n for n<=6 had serious problems with USB support, while 2.4.x worked fine. Since the kernel changes too fast, it is obvious that all Linux distributions have a quality of a beta version. Last fiddled with by alpertron on 2006-06-19 at 19:48 |

With ubuntu I can choose 2.4.* or 2.6.*
![]() XP will lose contact with a USB mouse I have, whereas kernel 2.6 doesn't. Quote:

And, you don't have to install all updated packages in Linux. You don't have to install many updates unless you are not the only one user of the system (fixes for local attacks etc). This way you can save download time and decrease the probablity of messing up your system.
In Windows world you are forced to install all patches, and they break a system much more frequently than Linux patches. Also, the patch sometimes brings a new version of the componet, instead of just a fix (for example, Windows Media Player). Applying patches is optional. Selecting individual patches for installation is also easy --- choose the custom install option when offered it. Paul |
