Default P4 560 LGA775

Results for P4 560 LGA775 cpu overclocked to 3.5GHz (using dual channel DDR2 533MHz memory). CPU is the Prescott D0 stepping. Operating system used is Linux Fedora Core 3 on the v2.6.9 SMP kernel.

The cpu is totally stable, and I can even overclock to 3.6+GHz. But when running Prime95, the temperature soon nears 80 degrees.... something I'm not too comfortable with. Once over the 3.5GHz mark, temperature increases exponentially. I've capped the overclock to 3.5GHz - temp is just a tad under 70 degrees using stock cooling.

Go download the new 24.6 version of Prime95 (you are using v23.8). It should give you almost a 20% speed up! :)

It is a beta. "No yet ready for prime time" so to speak. A few problems have been found. At least 1 fixed. Another is being checked on. A tweak is need to keep it from slowing down the P-III's. And we need to turn in a few DC's to check on it.

Default Prescotts almost matching Northwoods?

Following the discussion in this thread (about running one or two instances of Prime95) I did some benchmarks. The interesting ones are from my new 3.2 GHz Prescott. I also downclocked an overclocked Northwood 3.0 GHz to about 3.2 GHz for easy comparison.

The very interensting result is that for a hyperthreaded Prescott you get an overall performance gain by running two instances of Prime95, even when doing two Lucas-Lehmer tests. Furthermore, the benchmark then almost matches the Northwood.

The benchmarks below are the best times for three or four benchmarks.

1. Benchmark while DoubleCheck=13201703,64,1 running in the background.

Did you try a comparison during factoring?

I've a 3.2 GHz Prescott where I run Prime95 and LLR.
I noticed a sudden slow of LLR as soon as I switched from double-check to factoring in Prime95.

The switching was motivated by another thread, where it was said that hyperthreading was useful if factoring and ll-testing were done together.

If you run two instances of mprime doing different tasks or even doing the same task using different FFT sizes, then one will take more of the total processor time than the other, so I don't think it will be possible to get an accurate benchmark this way. On one machine the mprime running the benchmark task might be faster just because the LL testing task is running slower.

So it would be the best to run two regular LL tests simultaneously for some time (rather than one LL test and a benchmark), and then watch the average timings for this period of time (you need to set the "time between screen outputs" to some value, say 10-30 minutes).

I agree. The benchmark is not good because it returns the BEST time, where as a second LL test returns an AVERAGE time.

The danger with looking at the best time is that it can be easily skewed. If the OS swaps out the first LL test to run a thread that does some non-FPU work, then all of a sudden the benchmark gets a speed boost that will not be indicative of your average throughput in an LL test.

No, not for the Prescott, but I run 1 factoring + 1 LL-test on my two HT-capable Northwoods. It has been known for some time to give higher throughput than running them on separate computers.

The interesting point is that for Prescott two LL tests also give higher throughput. That is not the case for my Northwoods. My guess is that this applies to all Northwoods and Prescotts. Since most GIMPSters buy Northwoods we have believed that running two LL tests in parallel was always a bad thing. Just like I did until yesterday.

My timings seem to be roughly accurate for the 768K FFT length my LL-tests are running at for the moment. Then I get 0.026 s and 0.046 s iteration times for one or two clients running. (That's why I decided to do some benchmarks.) But one or two FFT levels might of course still be a bit off.

Default 23.8->24.11: Small speed up on Prescott

My benchmarks for primality tests show between 2% to 2.5% improvement in speed over v23.8. I've omitted trial factoring results - for speed reasons, these should obviously be done on an Athlon64 instead.

Default INTEL 630 benchmark (in 32-bit mode)

I was able to benchmark prime95 on one of Intel's new processors.
Interesting to compare with standard Northwood/Prescott 3GHz processors.

Not massively fast, dual channel memory would help it, but at least it runs ok. There are big potential speedups if a 64 bit client can be made to work on this processor but a 64 bit OS would be required. Note the L2 cache is 2MB.

Can you have both "CPUs" run their own respective benchmarks simultaneously, and then post the results? Do 2 dual cores almost behave like 2 separate PCs (i.e. twice as much done)? Anyone have a dual core P4 do test on?

Did you mean the Hypertransport link? If so, then your statement is not correct, because the link between the 2 cores is avoiding the HT controller. Communication happens via the SRQ ("System Request Queue"), which is the next thing after the L2 for both cores. IIRC bandwidth is 64bit@cpu clock in both directions (Hypertransport is 16bit@DDR2000 in both directions) and latency is also lower.

Some of the benchmarks done by nomadicus should already give you the desired numbers. I think, it doesn't matter, if the non-benched core runs a torture test with big FFTs or another benchmark, except if the second benchmark is running small FFTs while the other the big ones, which would corrupt the result.

What we see there is what I expected according to the architecture and the way, Prime95 works. Prime95 now needs low latency for memory accesses more than high bandwidth.

This can be seen in the development of the 24.xx versions on a Socket 754 (single channel) A64 vs. a Socket 939 (dual channel) A64. One observation is, that the improvements on S754 were greater than on S939 and the results came closer to the latter. This means, Prime95 became less dependent on memory bandwidth and maybe memory accesses at all (since George mainly optimized the use of the caches).

For results of 2 x Prime95 on a Smithfield, you could also take results of a dual Xeon system with 2 Prescotts and FSB800. If memory type and behaviour of the chipset are similar, the results should be too.

Btw, it says it's running at about 800 MHz, but it's actually at 1.99 GHz (100% according to Windows). There's no hyperthreading either

Default anybody have a dual core P4?

Does anyone have a dual core P4? If so, can you please post some benchmarks similar to nomadicus above. I am curious that when running 2 instances of Prime95 on a dual core P4, how close do you get to getting "twice" as much done? Nomadicus benchmarks seem to show the dual core X2 from AMD gets real close. Finally, even though for single cores, the Pentium 4 is faster, which architecture (at same clock speeds) gets 2 tests done quicker, a dual core X2 or a dual core P4? Is P4 overall still ahead, or will a dual core X2 be the new CPU of choice?

When not doing these benchmarks I have it overclocked to 3.5 GHz and both cores do LL tests with the 2048K FFT size. The iteration times are in the 58-60 ms area for both cores.

Xyzzy: Do you still want "FullBench=1" in prime.ini when doing the benchmarks?

Because dual-core machines are still new I made a screendump of what LL testing looks like. Upper left is core 0, lower right is core 1.

You can see the machine isn't used much by the consistant iteration times - it's still waiting for some hardware components before the real install is done.

Also, LL testing on core 0 is slightly slower which I believe is due to the Windows scheduler putting jobs on the first available processor, and since none is available, on the first one.

This difference of only 1 ms is something everybody could experience when running Prime95, closing it, and running it again on a single core (+/- HT) CPU.

IBM Thinkpad X20... I have no idea why there are errors above the 4096K FFT... The first result is Prime95 and the second is Mprime...

Default For my overclock Sempron(2400)

Actually I met problem when I overclock my Sempron(2400), from FSB 166Mhz to 200 Mhz the Prime95(24.14) can never run anymore. I tried the stress test, result as attached photo.

Did you have any idea? I just seek for any consult. Thank you!

also post the benchmark result of mine:

Looks like you are pushing your system beyond the actual possibilities of your CPU / cooling / RAM configuration. If your CPU has an unlocked multiplier then lower it to 8 - if you still get an error, then your RAM is your problem (you should change FSB/RAM divider to 5/6, or lower your current memory timings).
If "8" works fine then increase the multiplier until it's not fine, and then apply some more voltage to CPU, lower RAM timings, change FSB/RAM divider etc. Overclocking is all about experimenting

Got the Intel Dual Core P-D 930. Overclocked it to 3.6GHz/1.2750v. Damn 65nm is really nice. Memory is DDR2-533 overclocked to DDR2-640 4-4-4-12 running in Dual Channel. Asus P5WD2 Premium.

If I send you some executables and some data (source too, if you like)
could/would you run a lattice sieve benchmark on your machine, with both
processors running?
