As we have been made aware by many benchmarks already posted in this forum, Prime 95 doesn´t scale very well as the number of threads per test goes up. That´s an established fact.
Now what would be interesting to post, in my opinion, is the per iteration times when the number of worker windows (each one single threaded) goes up. That gives a good indication of whether we should use a given multi core CPU just for LL work (one test per core). If the iteration times are getting real worse with more workers running, it is then probably better to switch on or two cores to TF, for example.
As far as I could see, this type of benchmark hasn´t been posted much. I therefore suggest that we start posting this type of data, particularly for quad cores.

Looking at Garo's benchmark that seems not to be true any more with Intel's i5 (and i7) architecture that seems to have the necessary memory bandwidth : the slowdown for 4 threads is less than 10 % for FFT sizes from 1792 KB to 5120 KB.

But I agree that benchmarks with 4 different tests in parallel would be very interesting and would probably suffer less from inter core communication bottlenecks.

I just bought a new toy: an I7/920 with 12Gbytes.
This is a 4-core machine with HT @2.66GHz. I could have bought one
at 3.3Ghz, but the cost was 60% higher for only 25% more speed.
(another $600 for the i7/975)

I have benchmark data for SNFS with my current number: 2,1149-
The factor bases are each 2.8million ideals, the sieve region is 8K x 16K,
and the LP bound is 800Million (i.e. betweeen 29 and 30 bits)

The data given is the number of special-q's processed per minute.


1 core; 7.4
2 : 15
3 : 22
4 : 29
5 : 31.5
6 : 34
7 : 37
8 : 40

This is for code compiled as 32-bit code. I intend to recompile as 64-bit.
However, I am busy with 60 hour weeks on my real job, so this will take
a while.

Here's a way to override it and make it know what the CPU really is: (from undoc.txt)

Default VERY ODD results ... anyone have any suggestions?

I just installed Prime95 on:

Speed 1.999 GHz (1.765 GHz P4 effective equivalent)

Computer Memory 2814 MB   configured usage 1000 MB day / 1000 MB night 
--- it has 3 GB of RAM
I started with Worker 1: P-1; Worker 2: DC
The iterations times seemed high for a DC (0.130) so I ran a benchmark.
The results really surprised me.

With 1 core the numbers seemed low: i.e. 63 Ms for 1280 FFT
But when it went to 1 core/1 helper it got very weird: the iterations time went up by about 40% to about 80 ms for 1280FFT; and every other FFT below 7K (at which time they were slightly better than 1 core).

So I changed both cores to DC. With only 1 worker active running DC I was getting iterations times of about 70 ms. When the second DC worker started both iterations times dropped to 132 ms.

Task manager showed Prime95 consistently in the 98-99% range.

Any thoughts? Anyone help?

The QL-62 works with DDR2-667 (333 MHz Bus speed). It´s not much in terms of mem bandwith. I would say that might be the limiting factor in the benchies you posted. The way the numbers vary suggests some memory access congestion.

I just looked and there are 6 other benchmarks for the QL-62 are very close to mine ... that tells me this PC is working as expected and that it probably does NOT have a significant issue with spyware, viruses or overheating.

So maybe it is only/best suited for TF?

Default Deleting benchmarks???

One the benchmark page there is a "Delete?" column but no corresponding "Delete" button or option.

Am I missing something OR is this feature not fully implemented yet?

Ya, its implemented at a deeper level somewhere, I was confused by this at first too. The top level delete check boxes are non-functional.

Default i3 540 at stock (3067Mhz) and a little faster :)

Fry's was running an amazing deal last weekend -- an i3 540 _and_ a Gigabyte GA-H55-S2H motherboard for $99! This setup _really_ sips the juice. 50w at the wall at idle; <100w at the wall running two cores of Prime95 at stock speeds!!

Could you give it a try without hyperthreading ? From your data it seems there is a big overhead running with helper threads (multiple threads for one workunit.)

I have noticed the same thing on my i7. Im running 4010MHz as well, though I had to bump it to 1.34VCore. I left HTT enabled in BIOS but disabled it in the Prime95 config. Speedup is about 5ms per iteration depending on FFT size and it burns about 15W less electrical power according to Gigabyte DES.
I checked the same thing on my Prescott P4 and Atom, the effect was the opposite. Slower, and much slower on the Atom.
The way I interpret this, is P95 is utilizing the capability of an i7 core well enough, that there is not much in the way of resources left for the 'fake' thread to utilize, or the way its splitting the load does not work well with it.

I'm curious of this holds true for SB. I'm looking to build out an SB system in the near future and I'm not sure the extra $100 for a 2600K vs a 2500K is worth it just for HT. I'm going to move this into my existing water cooled box, so I imagine they'll both overclock just as well, so all that leaves is HT or no HT.

Anyone got an opinion on this?

Just curious...does this conclusion also apply for smaller FFT work as done by LLR? A friend of mine on the forum has an i7 and says that he gets ~5 cores' worth of speed on LLR because of the HT, but some of that could just be because his non-HT reference for comparison is a somewhat older Q6600.

Fair question, the CPU defaults to 3.3GHz but my overlocked turbo boosts to 4.6 GHz. With Sandy Bridge you can't just increase the default GHz, so it would be nice for Prime95 to implement a CPU-Z style check of the current speed. (see the validated CPU speed link in my other post)

To make matters more complex, you can set different turbo boost multipliers for 1,2,3,4 cores being active. In my benchmark I set all cores at the same 46x = 4.6GHz. However, for example, if only one core was active I could setup a 48x multiplier to get one core at 4.8Ghz.

Isn't that kind of a non-issue now with SandyBridge? You're basically now limited (as I understand it) to playing with the multiplier; adjusting the base clock by anything other than a tiny amount is no longer feasible since it affects everything, including things like PCIe that don't like to be overclocked.

I don't know if it is the same for all boards, but on Gigabyte boards at least, you can set the max turbo mode CPU multiplier for 1 - 4 cores, or you can disable turbo mode entirely and set a constant multiplier for all cores.

It's now possible to directly compare between CPUs on my throughput calculator. For example, assuming identical clockspeeds, you can see how an i7-2500K neatly outruns an i7-965 by a noticable amount.

There is a way to have a sustained clock speed (mine is 5.1 GHz on the i5-2500K) for 24x7 operation but it works best for chips with no hyperthreading, or hyperthreading turned off in the BIOS.

Here is the actual comparison between the two CPUs. At the same clock speed (2160MHz), other than a small difference between 1MB and 3MB FFT sizes, performance is nearly identical.

Was that even your question? The only place I see "B" is in my above quote about 1MB-3MB, which would be 1024K-3072K FFT sizes (or 1048576-3145728 if you prefer), as illustrated by the attached graph.

Jawohl. Ich habe already das alle gotten. Aber ein Bischen FFT nein = ein Bischen whatever ist fur "memory" zee Deutch (Ich vergesse). Nicht Wahr?
