Sorry about the typo...it's DDR2 as you guessed. I was running my ram at 4-4-4-12 at 400MHz 1:1, but just changed it to 5-5-5-15 at 533MHz, 3:4. I must admit I just figured out how to make this change today! The strapping settings on the motherboard were a bit confusing (I'm a novice recall). Right now it is stress testing but it looks good so far (few hrs in). For fun I started my four LL's and the iteration time dropped from 65 ms to 60 ms across all four cores, which is a nice improvement. Core temps are all 45 degrees C right now during the stress test.

For voltages, I had to crank things up from my earlier ram configuration. The VCore is happy at 1.3125V. Ram voltage is now at 2.1V which is the spec voltage (it didn't like anything less), and the northbridge is at 1.26V. The other voltages are on auto. Before the memory speed change it ran stable at 1.86 V, with the northbridge at 1.24V.

I've tried 3.4 GHz several more times but I can only get it to run stable for about 10 minutes. It didn't feel comfortable so I backed down to 3.2 GHz which it seems to like.

Anyway, I'm happy with my 8% performance improvement for the day :) Anything else I can tweak?

It looks like there's quite a bit more head room in your system since your temps are low and so is your VCore. You should be fine all the way up to 1.5 V if this thread is correct. Having said that, it would obviously be a bad idea to jump straight there, one should always creep up to these things.

It would probably be a good idea to set yourself a hard limit that you won't pass, like no more than 65 C under load, or 1.45 max VCore.

Depending on how good your CPU cooler and case airflow are, you may want to be more restrictive or more lenient than that though.

I'm interested in trying for more but here's my concern. Right now it is running 400FSB at 8x for 3.2 GHz. I can't use fractional multipliers, so I have to use 8x or 9x. Also, I'm not sure it would be worth lowering the FSB to say 378 MHz at 9x (to achieve 3.4 GHz), since I think I want to keep the FSB high for good memory speed (though maybe there is a good memory divider for a setting like this?). So I think the only way I can go faster is to go beyond 400 MHz FSB, like 425 MHz. The motherboard is rated for 1600 MHz, so is it ok if I push it to 1700 MHz? I haven't read as much about that. My core temperatures have always been low, partly because I have a big cooler (zerotherm-FZ120) and partly because it is winter time and the room temperatures are low. In the summer this room will be at least 10 degrees F hotter. I've run the Vcore in the 1.4V range before in my attempts at 3.4 GHz, but like I said I was only able to keep it stable for about 10 minutes. Do you have suggestions for 3.3 GHz, 3.4, or other FSB speeds?

I just ran a comparison between DDR2@768MHz(5-5-5-15) and DDR3@1536MHz(7-7-7-20) on a Q6600@3.45GHz in this post (see there for analysis). I attach the spreadsheet with the numbers, and post benchmark results in this post.

Use the memory divider to run the RAM pretty slow, then try overclocking your CPU further. It may be that you hit the max speed for your RAM and that was holding you back with your CPU.

Once you get a nice CPU overclock, you can bring the RAM back up to speed.

But not my memory, unfortunately. My PC2-6400 is actually rated 4-4-4-15, and I can do that with 2 sticks but not 4 sticks (well, not well enough to be Prime-stable).
The PC3-12800 is rated at 7-7-7-20... you'll be hard-pressed to find any DDR3 that runs much tighter timings than that. And remember, I'm only underclocking the RAM by 4%

Hm, that's odd. Is it the voltage sagging? If so adding a little more VDIMM might fix it.

From my testing, the Q6600 doesn't support half multipliers. I tried swapping it with a E5200 and in the BIOS a new line appeared to do those 0.5x settings. So it's clearly not the board but dependant on the CPU.

The bottleneck here is the memory and not the FSB. I found very little improvement in raising it further - IMHO not worth the trouble. With your current settings, I think you're already at the max of what your hardware should be doing in terms of durability at running Prime95.

Given the bottleneck, you might want to consider using the 4th core to run something else rather than LL testing. In my case, I use it to feed the GPU client for folding@home. But you could also do TF or some other prime related project.

I'm running them at 2.10V, which sags to between 2.06V and 2.10V. I can bump that to 2.20V, but then my RAM runs hotter than I am comfortable with. I'm content, as a balance between everything, of sticking where I am.

The i7 benchmark times are better than the C2Ds, but not impressively so. However, with an integrated memory controller, I'm wondering how much the iteration times will decrease when doing 'real work'?

James Heinrich - have you started LL testing exponenets yet, and, if so, what are the iteration times, and what mix of work are you running on all cores? I would be particulary interested in iteration times when running a 2560 FFT exponent (LL test) in all four cores.

The drastic decrease in the iteration times shown in the first benchie (25.7.3) with two threads on one physical CPU seems rather strange to me. Normally the times decrease that much when you throw the second CORE in, not a second thread in the same core, which is the case. For the version 25.8, the times decrease by just the small amount expected in that situation, and it´s just when the second core kicks in that the times go significantly down.

That's because of an affinity bug identifying the hyperthreaded CPUs in 25.7. It was actually using two physical CPUs.

Sorry, it's not actually my system. I had access to run benchmarks for a few minutes, I don't actually have $4500 to spare to buy this system myself

Here's a benchmark I just ran on 64 bit Prime95 v25.9 under Vista SP1 64 bit on an i7 965 overclocked to 4.2 GHz.

However, both Vista and Prime95 get the speed wrong and say it's 4.032 GHz, which would be correct if I was running 24*168, but I'm running 25*168. CPUZ and Everest (not to mention BIOS) report the correct frequency.

Memory - 10*168 = 1680 MHz
Uncore - 20*168 = 3360 MHz
QPI - 44*168 = 7392 MHz

Edit: I should also mention that I have Turbo mode disabled so it isn't that messing up the speeds, and I've also disabled all other clock speed altering features I can find such as EIST. And since I'm already editing, I may as well mention I have HT on.

prime95 seems to get the speed of the cpu wrong if the multiplier isnt the standard
a few days ago i underclocked my Q6600 to the minimum 6x200 and prime95 detected the cpu speed 1.8 GHz instead of 1.2
i suspect if vista got it wrong for you then prime95 gets it cpu speed from the operating system
is anyone able to try this with xp or earlier

This benchmark done with 64-bit Debian. The 64-bit Vista benchmark we performed was a little faster overall but we do not plan to use Windows. We wonder why the Linux version is slower.

We have not had time to analyze the results to determine what work this box is best for. We are just happy it easily runs Linux and that it was cheap enough to buy 2 of them.

Each box has 6GiB of PC2-6400 memory configured as 2x2GiB and 2x1GiB. We are tempted to randomly move the memory around to end up with 1 8GiB box and 1 4GiB box.

The boxes run significantly cooler compared to our older 65nm Q6600 C2Q. We think the 9550 is a 65nm CPU with a 95W TDP. We verified that the CPU has the fixed "B3" stepping (?) to eliminate the "TLB" problem.

For comparison here are the benchmarks from a dual-core Opteron 2216 at 2400MHz. Ignore the two thread FFT timings as the other core was loaded at the time and the timings were a lot worse - about 10 times worse than single thread times. I don't know why they should be worse than single core timings. It seems that for multithread benchmarks when the first core is loaded mprime tries to use that anyway and ignores the other core which is sitting idle.

Perhaps it is the synchronisation causing it. One core has to wait for the other to complete its assigned job before it can continue to the next part. Just a guess, I have not examined the code for P95, so I could be completely wrong (and it wouldn't be the first time).

That may be due to Nehalem allowing macro-ops fusion for 64-bits instructions, whereas Conroe would only do it on 32-bits. 64-bit code may in general benefit slightly from the use of Nehalem.
