I was actually looking into this today also. If you search online for "penryn v8", you'll find lots of articles showing benchmarks from this mythical 8-core processor that would be out by the end of 2007. Apparently, it never did come out, and has been dropped altogether, since I can't find any recent references to it. I did find an article from last Friday saying that the last of the Penryn line is a 6-core Xeon, and it could be available starting this week. According to Wikipedia, you're right about Beckton. It will be the only 8-core variant of the Nehalem core, although it looks like Westmere (the desktop variant) may be available with 6 cores. I also found articles saying that AMD has scrapped their 6-core and 8-core designs, because they decided that 12-core would be the better choice. Their 12-core processors will be available in 2010. |

Below is a "fullbench" comparison of Q9450 and QX6700, both running on the same platform @ 3.2GHz. What is interesting is that "2 threads results" are much worse on Q9450. It seems that there is some issue with affinity on 45nm quad-core CPU... most likely instead of choosing core0+core1, Prime95 chooses core0+core2...

I tried to make everything else equal and see how much more I would pay going from Q9450 to Q9650 and from DDR2 800 to DDR3 1066. Can someone tell me if the Motherboards are essentially equivalent or NOT. System 2 is about $800 more ($1,200 vs $2000). From the quote it has half the memory but if I buy system 2 I will up it to 4Gb ... unless someone tells me it is a waste. If I read the benchmarks page correctly system 2 should be about 12% faster for current LL tests. Does this sound right? |

If I read it right both motherboards support DDR2 memory... from the two mentioned I would go for the second option although ASUS is not my favourite motherboard brand. Also I would buy 2x2GB at the beginning because upgrading dual-channel configuration later on is tricky (used modules should be generally the same).
Both motherboards are not equal (different chipsets), Intel uses chipset with integrated GFX (which will have an impact on performance). Asus motherboard officialy supports DDR2-1066 memory while Intel only DDR2-800. Go for the second option although check if you can exchange Asus for some Gigabyte motherboard, e.g. EP35-DS3 or DS4 series |

I'm not sure if this belongs in the benchmark thread, but I'd say forget both the Intel board (I've never liked them) and the QX-series CPU (waste of money better spent elsewhere). I agree with Cruelty on recommending Gigabyte boards (but Asus is good too). The P5K series is all DDR2 (except for the P5K-C which accepts either DDR2 or DDR3). If you go DDR2, get 1066MHz. If you get DDR3, go for 1600MHz. Inquire about the Q9550, it should cost almost identical to the Q9450, but at 2.83GHz (instead of 2.66GHz).

I talked to a local veteran supplier about motherboards: In his opinion, based on service repair frequency of Motherboards specifically: "Intel is crap. Gigabyte comes in for warranty work a lot more often than ASUS does" Based on your feedback I will go for the Q9550 instead of Q9450 and, if it is not a lot more pricey, I will get 2X2GB DDR3 1066 RAM. It should be noted that it's not THAT big of an increase. The latency of RAM is measured in clock ticks. So a CAS latency of 5 for 1066MHz RAM is an actual latency of 4.69 ns.
A CAS latency of 7 for 1600MHz RAM is an actual latency of 4.375 ns. There's very little in it. Memory speeds increase, but latency doesn't improve very much at all. Since it's basically standing still, it looks like it's moving backwards compared to everything else, but it really isn't. |

Keep in mind that P5K does not support DDR3, exception being P5KC, entire P5K3 series, Blitz Extreme and P5K64-WS. As for Asus boards, I don't complain about their products being broken or needed repair, just read the Asus forums and see how many problems people are having with those boards, especially check the forum concerning the specific motherboard you are planning to purchase

Gigabyte GA-EP45DS4P Motherboard (Has copper(brass?) heat pipes) 4GB DDR2-1066 Dual Channel "Reaper" RAM (5-5-5-12) PC Power 610W Power Supply Antec 300 case (aluminum case with lots of fans and the whole front is mesh) Finally I got to talk to someone who understood hardware, my needs and my questions: she knew what RAM latency was, that I needed good case/cooling, knew that DDR2 was still faster (except at the highest end) than DDR3, etc. BUT ... the one twist she threw at me was: "Do you realize that Microsoft XP can only address 3.2 Gb of RAM so the extra Gig won't be available to you?" Maybe I should get 3Gb? |

Get a 64-bit operating system; Vista or 64-bit XP. There's absolutely no point, particularly if you're doing maths and so 64-bit multiplications come in handy, in running a 32-bit OS on contemporary hardware.

XP64 is generally very hard to find these days (and if you do find it there are often fewer XP64 drivers than Vista64 drivers available), so you should probably go with a 64-bit version of Vista. |

Just wondering... won't /PAE be enough to solve the issue of 4GB not being recognised on XP 32bits? As I understand it, this will allow all 4GB to be used. The limitation being that not all the 4GB can be used by a single programme - but you can have 2 programmes using 2GB each.
