Anyone have benchmarks for the AMD Phenom? Very curious to see how running 4 copies of Prime95 affects the native quad core. Intel's "fake" quad core only hits 2.5-3x, depending on the memory used (bottleneck). On paper the Phenom should scale better.

I think it is interesting to note that Hyper threading seems to have a greater effect when the FFT sizes go outside the L2 Cache Range. Over the range of a 40G LLT the time gained amounts to about 1 hour.

The numbers in the attachment are for a Phenom 9500 @ 2200MHz and a Core2 Q6600 @ 3492MHz, but the benchmark numbers for both have been normalized to 1000MHz equivalent for comparison. According to these numbers, the Phenom scales approximately equally well at all FFT sizes, whereas the Core2 doesn't scale well at all at small FFT sizes (in fact, 3 and 4 threads perform worse than 2 threads). You can see the Core2 walks all over the Phenom (88% faster at 768K, around 150% faster at 3072K and 8192K). The Core2 scales very well to 2 cores (about 90% efficient), but Core2 with 3-4 cores and Phenom with 2-4 cores are around 50-65% efficient.
On the TF side, the Core2 again dominates, showing numbers 117% to 159% faster than the Phenom.

Admittedly these are numbers from a TLB-bug-affected Phenom9500, so numbers may look different with the new B3 versions just appearing now. When I see a system with a 9x50 Phenom I'll see if I can grab some benchmark numbers.

1. What frequency were you running the CPU at?
2. DDR2 or DDR3?
3. Mobo used?

James... thanks very much for the phenom benchmarks. This has been very useful in helping me decide on my next build. The price of the phenom is sweet, but the performance of the Core2 architecture, overclockability and energy consumption is more compelling. Perhaps the Phenom will become a better choice without the TLB bug and also if AMD manages to ramp up the clock speeds. It's still a very new architecture, while Intel has had lots more chance to tweak the Core2.

In the end I went for the Q6600 'G0' stepping and PC8500 memory - overclocks nicely to 3GHz without even a voltage bump, been prime stable for last 12 hours.

Thanks, I finally ended up going with a Q6600. I knew that this was a well tested processor, and would be stable.
I did, however decide to buy DDR3!

DDR3 is not currently any faster than DDR2. Mine is 1066, and it is actually supposed to be slower than 1066 DDR2, and it's a lot more expensive.
I knew this before buying, but I know the next computer I build will use DDR3, and I don't want to be stuck with old DDR2.
The other benefit to DDR3 is that it is more power efficient. Of course, if I was that concerned about power, I wouldn't be running mprime!

The first day after setting up the computer, my heatsink wasn't seated right. I ran the benchmarks then, and the single core marks were about the same, but marks with all cores running were terrible.
Even though the computer claimed it was full speed, I think that something was running slower because of the heat.
After placing the heatsink again, I was very pleased :)

How do you think that v25.6 would scale across 200,00 cores?

That computer is being built here in my town, and I have some friends that work at NCSA. I should ask them about the possibility of giving mprime a test when Blue Waters comes online in 2011, although I kind of doubt any of them would have any say in that.

It is based on Power7. So, no way to use Prime95. Also, I have no figures about the scalability of Mlucas or Glucas over a network of computers. All my experiments were done on SMP or NUMA machine. But I guess that the scalability will be awfull very quickly...

The performance would be terrible! Each iteration requires intercore communication thus any latency becomes a real problem. Even the addition of 1ms would be enough to wreck the parallelism gains of any extra cores. Only SMP systems or limited hop NUMA systems are going to be of any use based on the current programs. The chunks of work simply aren't of sufficient duration to perform outside of the box.

The good news is there are plenty of eight core CPUs coming out over then next few years so there'll be plenty of 16 or 32 active threads with single hop options for us to toy with.

It seems we will have to wait until at least H2 2009 before 8-core chips become publicly available. Intel isn't releasing its "Beckton" (also called "Nehalem-EX") processor until then, and I don't think any other company is releasing an 8-core chip earlier than that. Even so, the "Beckton" chip is intended for servers, and we will probably have to wait several more months before the desktop versions become available.
