Hmmm, the difference between "RDTSC, CMOV, Prefetch" enabled benchmark and benchmark with those features disabled varies between 3 and 7% in favour of "SSE2 + MMX" only benchmark. This doesn't look like some standard variation to me.
I will rerun benchmarks one more time today to verify this. |

I have verified it once more, however this time I was not able to reproduce the difference I have observed before - the differences are less than 1% actually. This makes me think what could actually happened before

I achieved this on a D830 whithout fiddling a lot. But now I am running at a more conservative 3450 MHz : a temperature rising to 80 °C is not good to keep for long ;-) Even at a moderate 3450 MHZ more than 150W has to be transfered away via the cooler.
I think about swapping the D830 for a D950 (with the coming of the Core 2 Duos they are cheapper.) The main incentive is energy conservation : the D830 gobbles electricity to change it to heat and as a byproduct you get some calculations, the D950 has a 95 W thermal design compared to the 130 W of the D830. IMO the performance should be expressed by W. Then it is possibly the laptops that will be top of the mark. Wow -- I haven't dabbled much in overclocking since the Celeron 300A to 450Mhz overclock was popular. Before that it was a bevy of 486-75s that I ran at 100 (man, they kicked butt at assignments in the ~90000 range :P) but I had to give it a try with my new Core 2 Duo E6300. This is a CPU that can be had for around $200 these days. I stuck it on a Gigabyte P965-DS3 and added 2x512MB of Patriot DDR2-800 memory. Total cost under $500 for the CPU, memory, and motherboard!
Anyway, here're results running with the memory at 950 (475), running 4-4-4-12! This puts the CPU at around 3330Mhz, compared to stock 1.86Mhz. This is all with plain old heatsink + fan cooling, at default voltage on the CPU, but 2.0V on the DDR2. Even with only 2MB of L2 cache, the chip does very well. 60 minutes of torture testing have completed so far without error. Is using overclocked machines for doublechecking assignments only considered okay these days? And, as I've pointed out elsewhere, your choice doesn't matter one way or another to GIMPS progress. We can use all contributions, large or small, in any work category. It's far more important not to poach a GIMPS assignment (which may dishearten the assignee) than it is to steer a CPU of any speed toward or away from a particular work category. If GIMPS administrators think contributions are "out of balance", there are ways of rebalancing while still allowing all participants free choice of work type, as long as a substantial fraction of participants use the default choice of "whatever makes sense". (Personally I prefer to see an OC torture-tested at least 50 hours without errors before trusting it with any GIMPS assignment, but I'm known to be picky.) Besides, when DC work catches up to first time checking, that just means it's time to start full-scale triple checking :) In fact, I've been wondering if that would be a reasonable feature to try to get in to PrimeNet v5/Prime95 v25: the option to use glucas or other code on a "triplecheck" assignment using a Prime95 client with both the prime95 and glucas LL code incorporated. -Ethan |

Here are the results from a machine that has given me fits. At times it is good, at times it slows down.
on a 1024K FFT number it was turning out 0.252-0.273 iterations Mersenne.org says this machine should turn out 0.271 After stopping the test, running the bench, restarting, it is now running 0.33's Sometimes I can exit p95 and restart to drop it back down, but often I have to reboot to get it back down. Here are the results for my machine (no overclocking). The results are not impressive that's why I'm planning to switch to an Intel Core 2 Duo next year.

I noticed the benchmark I sent to George is not on the benchmark page. (Pentium D 3.2 GHz, 2x2048 MB cache.) Is there a minimum number of benchmarks needed for them to be posted, or is there just a backlog of benchmarks?
Here it is for efficiency: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz CPU speed: 3199.81 MHz CPU features: RDTSC, CMOV, Prefetch, MMX, SSE, SSE2 L1 cache size: 16 KB L2 cache size: 2048 KB L1 cache line size: 64 bytes L2 cache line size: 64 bytes TLBS: 64 Prime95 32-bit version 24.14, RdtscTiming=1 Best time for 512K FFT length: 14.280 ms. With the current dual and quad cores it does not make a lot of difference when benchmarking if the other cores are idle or benchmarking as well.
The memory bottleneck becomes apparent when doing "real" work. With my QuadCore running 4 benchmarks together I had best iteration times equivalent to those of a dual core. But when running real work the times went up by 25% (all cores busy with 1536K FFT exponents.) This is on a P965 based board. With a NVIDIA 650 SLI board the memory bottleneck is even more obvious : the iteration times go up by more than 120% running four primality tests instead of one !!! In all reviews the memory benchmarks are done using one core only, this is why AnandTech and others come to the conclusion that 400 MHz memory is optimal for Core 2 Duos and even Core 2 Quads. In reality that kind of memory speed is not sufficient. The Pentium D9xx did not overload the memory, but they reached the limit. This will become worse when the FFT sizes will grow further. More realistic benchmarks can be obtained by loading all other cores with Primality tests. Another thing would be to have the program give AVERAGE iteration times instead of Best iteration times. The thing to remember is : don't expect the current QuadCores to perform like two dualcores. And most important don't go for a NVIDIA chipset with Core 2 Duo or quads. Jacob |

...or just stick to one Prime95 test + run 3 instances of LLR @ 128k FFT length - the performance hit per core is 1-3%= negligible (tested on nV 650i board)
