I swapped my Duron 1100 for an XP1800... Right now I am running the XP at 1150MHz by keeping the memory and CPU at a 100MHz FSB... (Very long story!)
So given the XP is only 50MHz faster and has a larger L2 cache, I didn't expect much of a difference, but in fact it looks like 15%... I finally got the memory stable at 133MHz, so now everthing is at stock speed rather than underclocked... I had to slow down some memory options to get it to pass a 24 hour torture test... The chipset is a SiS chipset so memory bandwidth is pretty poor... Still, it is plenty fast for what I need...

No more Northwoods are available at my local distributors, so I ended up with a 2.8 Prescott C0 stepping. Here's the benchmarks when overclocked to 225FSB (i.e. 3.15GHz). Motherboard used was a Abit IC7:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz CPU speed: 3157.13 MHz CPU features: RDTSC, CMOV, PREFETCH, MMX, SSE, SSE2 L1 cache size: unknown L2 cache size: 1024 KB L1 cache line size: unknown L2 cache line size: 128 bytes TLBS: 64 Prime95 version 23.8, RdtscTiming=1 Best time for 384K FFT length: 12.820 ms. Best time for 448K FFT length: 15.627 ms. Best time for 512K FFT length: 17.632 ms. Best time for 640K FFT length: 21.003 ms. Best time for 768K FFT length: 25.204 ms. Best time for 896K FFT length: 30.486 ms. Best time for 1024K FFT length: 33.953 ms. Best time for 1280K FFT length: 45.135 ms. Best time for 1536K FFT length: 54.065 ms. Best time for 1792K FFT length: 64.891 ms. Best time for 2048K FFT length: 72.469 ms. Looks similar to the results one would get with a Northwood 2.9GHz (if it were to exist). Hence, clock for clock, the Prescott is 8.6% slower than a Northwood on Prime95. |

I just finished building a new box to replace my XP1800 that died... I was stuck using my old P3-600 and that was killing me!
I went A64 so I guess I'll be complaining like everyone else for an optimized client... I was going to get a P4 but I couldn't find any Northwoods and I didn't want a Prescott... In fact, most of the hardware I saw for sale locally was LGA stuff and needed DDR2 and/or PCI Express... That's all way too fancy for me... I don't even use USB yet, my video card is a PCI Voodoo 3 and my sound is a SB16! Basically, the box is a 3200+ (2GHz, 1MB L2) Socket 754 CPU, an Asus K8V mobo and 512MB of Corsair PC3200 memory... I put it in an Antec SLK2600AMB case... I was going to wait for the 90nm 939 stuff, but I got impatient, and I'm not going to overclock so there shouldn't be much of a difference... Finding a 1MB L2 chip took me a while because I had to look on each cpu for a "5" in the code... The local store I bought it from had a pile of processors but they were all marked wrong on the packaging for some reason... This is the first time I've ever bought an OEM CPU... I found this link very helpful: http://www.thedigerati.us/info/amdcpuchart.html Anyways: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ CPU speed: 2002.29 MHz CPU features: RDTSC, CMOV, PREFETCH, MMX, SSE, SSE2 L1 cache size: 64 KB L2 cache size: 1024 KB L1 cache line size: 64 bytes L2 cache line size: 64 bytes L1 TLBS: 32 L2 TLBS: 512 Prime95 version 23.5, RdtscTiming=1 Best time for 384K FFT length: 23.858 ms.
