Go to http://distributedcomputing.info/recent.html and then read where it says, "Pi Segment." So PiHex has calculated pi to the one quadrillionth digit!? I thought that the record before that was 1.2 trillion. How does a distibuted computer system calculate pi? Does it take (4/1)-(4/3)+(4/5)-(4/7)+(4/9)-(4/11)+(4/11) and so on? Watch for about 50 seconds into this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw . It's a parody of Ridin' Dirty. Last fiddled with by stathmk on 2009-03-17 at 00:51 |

PiHex calculated the quadrillionth hex digit without calculating all the digits in front. Kanada et al hold the record for all digits to the right of the decimal point, 1.2 trillion.
Nobody uses Gregory's series to compute anything, but I've done some dabbling with it. The number one rule of distributed computing, that many who undertake it forget, is a little research up front is infinitely easier than diving in and building something pointless |

I only know 14 digits of pi past the decimal point. Here’s the list of pi memorization records http://pi-world-ranking-list.com/lists/memo/index.html . However, they didn’t notice the 100,000 digit record.
Daniel Tammet was on The American TV show “60 minutes.” I believe that the name of his book is “Born on a Blue Wednesday.” It took me a couple of hours to find this comic strip from http://comics.com/ripleys_believe_it...rch=&x=10&y=11 . I got 1,060 digits of pi stuck in my head.
And my personal record for typing 1,000 digits via keypad is 3:16 min. (Also managed 385 digits in one minute.) |

Hadn't thought of that. I was aiming at < 3 min.I only try this at lunch breaks (not that anyone thinks I waste my spare time at home with this). And last time I did was several weeks ago, I hope I still know all the digits... Last fiddled with by mart_r on 2009-03-31 at 19:17 |
