Default Home page simplified...

Our home page was getting a bit crowded so everything has been shuffled a bit. I hope it is acceptable to everyone. Comments are appreciated.

It was better before :(
I liked to have a quick look at the home page, to see what's new in each forum without visiting them...

I too thought it was starting to look crowded

Rather than opening a new page that just has "other projects" it would be better that it is "expanded" inside the main page. Further, it would be cool if one could change a setting to see what you want when one returns to the main page -- similar to the way google groups allows expanded or short lists.

We had an expandable page before but there was no way to have it default to unexpanded.

That little star in the bottom left, just below "server" is pretty useful. Clicking on it shows the other half of the site and a clicking on "mersenneforum" takes you back to the main page. Less scroll/drag. I can live with new layout

Is there any way I can have it expanded by default? I liked it before when everything was on one page.

The star is actually the name of the forum that is holding all the other forums. I couldn't think of an appropriate name so I used an asterisk.

There are no user options that allow this behavior.

The original idea we had was to move only certain subforums to a second page, but determining which ones would get moved proved to be a bit hard. Nobody really wants their pet project put off the home page. But, since this is a GIMPS forum primarily, we decided to put all the GIMPS stuff on the home page along with the Lounge, since it is so popular. I know it isn't going to make everyone happy but the home page was getting crazy.

One benefit of this is we are much more likely to create even more new subforums so if you have a project that needs one, or a different idea for a subforum, let us know.

I hate the changes you made today.

It seems as if users can only read about GIMPS or other projects at a time. It makes difficult to monitor all the subforms.

Can we switch back to the old way?

Another potential benefit is we were able to "promote" several projects to the second page. Before, they were buried even deeper. Now they even show up on the home page.

I have to say that I liked it the original way better as well. It allowed for much faster information gathering to collect for Kirk Pearson's site and forum.
