Default rounding error

im a little new to this whole stress testing thing, but when i first run prime95, i get this:
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.4997914962, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

what exactly does this mean?

It means that something in your computer hardware is not working quite right, and is performing bad calculations. If you are overclocking, you will want to back off on how hard you are overclocking your machine. If you are not overclocking, your memory or CPU might have a failure, and you should try replacing them. It's better if you can borrow replacement components at first, and if you can find the problem, then you can buy replacement parts.

i just put a brand new stick of 512 pc2700, straight from googlegear.com.....i originally bought this because my other stick of 512 i was using was bad, and i swapped the old one out with a stick of the exact same 512 i have in now, the one i just bought, and it was working fine with his before......i just find it hard to believe that this brand new stick of RAM is bad......should i run memtest86 on the RAM to see if thats the problem for sure?

Slimjim, that would be a good idea. But first, check your ram settings in your Bios. Maybe they were set very fast. You might want to back them off a bit.

You would be surprised at some of the garbage coming from reputable dealers nowadays. It's not really their fault, the manufacturers are trying to take shortcuts and not testing anything before it is shipped.

Note that Prime95 is very demanding on CPU, chipset and memory. Some Hw problems are unveiled under P95 that would otherwise not be noticed. But it doesn´t have to be a memory problem... What processor are you using? How are you cooling it? It´s common to have problems running the stress test and/or the actual LL tests due to an overheating CPU. Keep an eye on the temp monitor while the test is running.
