Apparently (from a book on random networks) Kevin Bacon is actually not the most connected actor in Hollywood; he barely breaks into the top 1000, and is only famous for connectivity via some lucky mention on a talk show. The most connected actors in Hollywood are actually a bunch of guys from the 1950's that nobody's ever heard of, but have been around for long enough. Interestingly it doesn't have much to do with the number of films they've been in, the most famous adult film actors have thousands and thousands of films and yet have very low connectivity.

I thought this might be a bit too far off-topic to sling into this thread but then I looked at teh conversation :surprised

Exhaustive research.
PS: Thanks Serge, I had no idea my number was so low. Upon reflection any interest in number theory will bias the Erdos number downwards. Last fiddled with by jasonp on 2012-09-13 at 21:45 |

We have a mutual number 3 as well - via TL Madden and JU Pontius!
It's an equilateral triangle with 9 distinct people, how cool is that? |

I suspect those 50s-era most-connected actors are so by virtue of having worked with well-connected producers and directors: think Roger Corman, by way of an obvious example. If my hypothesis is correct, then non-headlining actors who were favorites of Corman should be quite well-connected. For example, can you find me the Hollywood connectivity of this fellow? My guess is that it's quite high. (Not as many movies for Mr. Miller as for a typical grindhouse-porno veteran like our own Jason "Papa Doc" Papadopoulos, but very busy by non-porno standards.) Test your six degrees knowledge
I actually have friends that can play this game (actually the harder version, 'six degrees of anybody in Hollywood') completely from memory. Last fiddled with by jasonp on 2012-09-14 at 16:47 |

Hmm, Bill Gates has a Bacon number of 2 and an Erdos number of 4 so it would appear that I'm within the legendary 6 degrees of freedom.
Actually, I have another close relationship with Bill. For a couple of years or more he was my great-grandboss. The chain went me -> Roger Needham -> Nathan Myhrvold -> Bill Gates. Paul |
