Question What is this forum specialised in?

It looks like a general purpose forum, but so many specialized topics in
this section.
I do Verilog & FPGA, is it worthwhile to post my questions here?

Hi Spartan.

I guess you're named after the famous Xilinx FPGA of the same name.

Welcome to the mersenne forum.

We are interested in math and prime numbers (and other things too).

To do this we use hardware (computers) and software (written in C and hand-coded assembler).

This is suitable for both linux and windows, 32 and 64 bit x86.

Additionally some of us are interested in similar software on say apple mac or unix boxes.

Further to that, a small minority of us are into hardware design languages including Verilog and VHDL (search posts in the forum). It is for example possible to implement the ECM algorithm as FPGA hardware.

We are also interested in FFT which can be done in FPGA.

It is difficult to get the price/performance/clockspeed tradeoffs in fpga to rival good software implementations, but for some things it would be worthwhile.

Some of us have access to some FPGAs, HDL development tools, some textbooks eg on verilog or hardware design and a little knowledge or experience.

Sounds like you're already aware of the Xilinx products and website which has many good articles. Altera's site is also good.

If you are just looking for FPGA generally, try googling the newsgroups for "computer architecture fpga". Or check out something like the opencores site where you will find source HDL code for interesting stuff.

If however, you're interested in one of the math projects here or the vague subject, feel free to post either questions or ideas (to maintain forum etiquette the hardware subforum is best for FPGAs as you have done).

Regards, Peter
