Moo, you are right about K7 generation of AMD CPUs - the best way to test if such CPU is overheating, is to touch the heatsink The situation changed with K8 (A64)...
As for Intel chips I thought that starting with P4 those readings were accurate

Secondly, AMD CPUs do not have an internal diode to measure CPU temperature, and in the case of Intel CPUs, the internal diode is not accurate enough for good measurements. So it is not possible to measure the temperature there, where it matters, inside the CPU core. With a simulator, the temperature can be measured right in the simulated die.
Starting with Athlon XP (Palomino, Thoroughbred, Barton) the AMD CPUs also had temperature diodes. Just most of the boards didn't support it that quickly.
