Let's see.

1 mile = 1.609km.
1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 litres.

For each gallon, I do 55 miles, so for each gallon I do 55*1.609 km, which is 88.495 km.

Therefore to do 100 km, I need 100/88.495 gallons, which is 1.130 gallons, which in turn is 1.130*4.546 litres, or 5.137 litres.

You are correct. Thank you. I've also realised my earlier error --- the number given was wrong by a factor of 1.609

People don't realize what 1mpg(US) means for example:

Going from 20 mpg to 21 mpg means for the same distance you spend almost 5% less gas.If 1 liter is $1.05,then $1.05 .05*liters per fill * fills/week * weeks the car can last saved if at constant gas cost (unlikely).

Some numbers:
Scenario 1: Car is kept for 10 years, driven 12,000 miles a year, gas is $3.00 a gallon.
Total savings going from 20 to 21 mpg: $857

Scenario 2: Car is kept for 10 years, driven 15,000 miles a year, gas is $3.00 a gallon.
Total savings going from 20 to 23 mpg: $2,935

Scenario 3: Car is kept for 8 years, driven 12,000 miles a year, gas is $3.25 a gallon.
Total savings going from 20 to 23 mpg: $2,035

Scenario 4: Car is kept for 12 years, driven 15,000 miles a year, gas is $5.00 a gallon.
Total savings going from 50 to 55 mpg: $1,636

Scenario 5: Truck is kept for 7 years (current average life span is 6.7), driven 160,000 miles a year (total life miles of 1.12 million, which is quite common), diesel is $3.17 a gallon (today's national average price).
Total savings going from 6 to 9 mpg: $197,244

Scenario 5: Truck is kept for 10 years, driven 200,000 miles a year, diesel is $3.50 a gallon.
Total savings going from 6 to 11 mpg: $530,303

Medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks are much less fuel-efficient than conventional automobiles; the fleet of tractor-trailers typically get about 6 mpg to 7 mpg, while work trucks can achieve 10 to 11 mpg. While only representing 4 percent of the vehicles on the road, they consume about 20 percent of the transportation fuel in the U.S.

The estimated fuel demand savings is 20% to 38% of the total demand from the fleet of 68,000 trucks.
According to estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) SmartWay Program, owner/operators who may implement these technology bundles may expect to recover their loan payments from fuel costs savings in four to eight months.
Bolding all mine.

These numbers would be more appropriate if you compared the percentage of miles driven vs the percentage of transportation fuel used, not the number of vehicles driven vs fuel (unless of course by "vehicles on the road" they are taking this into account, and I'm just misunderstanding it). Work trucks are probably driven much farther on average than the average person's vehicle. I'm sure it would still reveal a significant fuel usage with 6-7 and 10-11 MPG, but it wouldn't be misrepresenting the facts.

A modern catalysed diesel releases a comparable amount of nitrogen oxides to a gasoline (still slightly more), a lot less CO and CO2 and more particles (much better than the old diesel though).
We found it interesting that our new truck uses selective catalytic reduction. (Check out the attached PDF.) It also has a diesel particulate filter and we have the option to run B20 fuel.

It runs so clean that we sometimes wonder if it is more eco-friendly than a comparable gasoline engine.

Diesel engines are certainly more interesting!

I installed twin exhausts on my Reliant Robin, but people kept mistaking it for a wheelbarrow.

Bumper sticker: All the parts falling off this vehicle are of the finest British manufacture.

I often travel to the Czech Republic, home of the Å koda, where I was amused to learn that the locals tell exactly the same jokes as the British, though in Czech of course.

Examples:

Why do Å koda's have heated rear windows? To keep your hands warm when pushing it.

How do you double the resale value of a Å koda? Fill the fuel tank.
