Did you look at the pentopt.pdf on the page linked to by jasonp? It has lots and lots of timing details.

In fact Schmit's book is actually out of date.
Pentopt.pdf is really what I was looking for, but I haven't had the time to carefully study it (Here is its link) .

It is a must for any assembler optimizer as long as George doesn't start collecting his ideas in a book... (hint! hint!)
