As pointed out by rogue, in a spherical geometry the nine dots could lie on three adjacent lines of “longitude”, so that a straight line passing through the top row of dots could join at the pole to another straight line passing through the middle row of dots which meets at the opposite pole another straight line passing through the bottom row of dots. I see nothing in the statement of the problem that excludes this as a solution. What I don’t understand is Alex’ comment about the dots possibly having positive area. Perhaps I’m missing something, (as usual) but I can’t see how thinking about them as being (as Wacky pointed out) nine trees in an orchard, or even as nine spaceships rather than as nine Euclidean points changes the solution. Would anyone care to enlighten me?

If they have area, you can slant the lines going through them.

The next tightening should be easy, now: one stroke only. H.

What exactly is the point of degenerating this puzzle to the point of inanity?

OK let's close the thread, if nobody has any objections. Remains the really perturbing question: Am I a crank? CU, H.

I don't think you are since your original question elicited some interesting responses. Did you have a solution in mind when you asked the question?

I could say no, but I had akruppas solution in mind. And I made sure that we had spoken of dots, not points. So, I am not? What a pity! H.
