This could well go in the "Hmmm" thread, but here is a happier place, and this turns out to be a happy link.

I don't normally read/post this sort of website or story, but it's about a large group of high school students doing *exactly* the right thing (appropriate *and* effective)... which in and of itself is a minor miracle.

They misspelled 'xyzzy'. (However, that is an incredible collection.)

I now realize that the game logo is Xyzzy backward, with some duplicated characters.

That's terrible!

Why did the cat sit in the circle? No idea, say dumbfounded vets | Daily Mail Online

A friend comments:

“Why did the cat sit in the circle?”
because a box wasn’t available.

I think this behavior may be related to "lie on object human is paying attention to" behavior. A Silly Picture came through a while back which featured a kitten looking unhappy, with a caption, "I want to sleep on the keyboard, but nobody is using the computer."

Another example was reported to me by a friend who still likes actual newspapers, and the act of reading them. One cat she had would want to lie on the News or Op Ed page she was reading. However, he could be bought off with the Sports section laid nearby. He had his piece to lie on, and she had hers to read.

It seems that exact shape of a confined space does not much matter. There were hexagons and far more irregular shapes shown in the article. I don't have a cat to experiment with, but I would wager that a cat-sized rectangle would be just as attractive as other shapes. After all, most boxes are rectangular, and we know how many cats feel about them.

It would be an interesting line of research to investigate if adequately-sized triangles might prove to be equally acceptable "lairs".
