Picked up a Prescott 2M at work the other day and finally got it running in my board. It's a 4Ghz chip, but I can drop the multiplier if you want to see results for a different speed. Memory is running at 400Mhz dual channel.

I'm a happy camper now.

Clock for clock, the AMD XP's run just as fast as the P4s now.

How come? I haven't seen any justification for such a claim yet...

No.

George has done an impressive job of closing the performance gap, but
AMD AXP 1.6GHz iteration times are around 40% higher than a P4 1.6GHz (Northwood).

Maybe he meant A64, because in this case the statement is true.

Now we have to wait until A64 challenges P4 on PR-rating to MHz basis

BTW: Is it possible for e.g. A64 3400+ (2400 MHz) to challenge P4 3400 MHz under Prime95 LL testing? What do you think?

Cool v24.12 (beta) Benchmarks

Have two pairs of benchmarks for comparison - the first benchmark is with v23.8, the second with v24.12

The first set is on my dual P4-Xeon 1800 sys (CPU0 is performing the benchmark while CPU1 is idle) .. note to dopey me - I dropped the beta inplace before I ran the v23.8 benchmark so the times are bass-ackwards ..

It's not possible, because Prime95 LL testing depends a lot on the throughput of SSE2 instructions (besides cache/memory performance and some less important factors), which - per clock - is the same on both architectures. The only really winning situation for A64 so far is TF - especially in 64 bit mode (again more or less than 100% faster).

A little chance (combined with a lot of work) lies in the implementation of a hybrid modular/FP transform, which could make use of the idling integer units (like the 64 bit multiplier). But this depends on how many instruction issue slots are used on average by Prime95. But this is another topic
