Default Prime95 start up problem

Hello all,

I've been trying without success to start Prime95 on my Windows 2003 Server SP1, without success
The program starts loading(cursor changes aspect) but before anything happends it gets back to normal. Looking closer at windows's ingoing stuff i found out the software coredumps everytime:
10:39:47 PM svchost.exe:1156 CREATE C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\ErrorRep\UserDumps\Prime95.exe.20050502-203947-00.mdmp SUCCESS Options: Create Access: All
10:39:47 PM svchost.exe:1156 CLOSE C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\ErrorRep\UserDumps\Prime95.exe.20050502-203947-00.mdmp SUCCESS
10:39:47 PM svchost.exe:1156 CREATE C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\ErrorRep\UserDumps\Prime95.exe.20050502-203947-00.mdmp SUCCESS Options: OverwriteIf Access: All

Then i went in the event viewer to find out more about it, and i see this error:
Faulting application Prime95.exe, version 23.8.1.0, faulting module Prime95.exe, version 23.8.1.0, fault address 0x00081011.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've found out the Prime software for Windows 3.1 will run but not prime95...

[Edit]: the error adress is always the same

If anyone has an idea, please help.

Note: there is no antivirus/weird firewall software running

Best regards,

Various ideas

Is virtual memory disabled, some tests will crash without vm.
Copy of Prime95.exe is corrupted. Get it again or try a newer version 24.
Running Prime95 as a service, normally it is just a process
and doesn't need svchost to run.
Perhaps some sort of Policy is triggered that
stops it from running/creating files.

Default Might be Data Execution Protection...

I had a similar issue when I applied SP1, then discovered the new feature named DEP (or DPE, not sure about the name) as an additional tab under My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance Settings.

In short, DEP (XP SP2 should have a similar feature) controls program execution and, when it finds a program behaving oddly according to its "canonical" rules (whatever this might mean) it terminates it, believing the program to be some sort of malware. And, according to DEP's rules, Prime95 appears to fall into this category.

My solution was to enable DEP's list of authorized programs, then add prime95 to it; reboot, and it has been working for around a month, now. Alas, no M43, yet

Hope this helps

Version 24.11 (and maybe 24.6?) is supposed to cure the DEP problem

I have Prime95 running as an NT service along with Windows XP on a CF card. I disabled virtual memory to limit the drive writes and prolong the life of the CF card.

Haven't completed a test yet and haven't had any problems - should I expect any with not running virtual memory?

The virtual memory problem only occurs running the non-in-place torture test. And that bug might be fixed in 24.11

I think that I have run into this problem with a machine and it is running 24.11 (I think). It seems to have shut down Prime 2 times.

Default DEP and Prime95

Made a specific test, and I can confirm what George said some posts ago: on my Win Server 2003 EE SP1, DEP with Prime95 v24.11 (April 30 build) is not an issue - so at present I'm having DEP fully enabled and v24.11 running smoothly.

On the other hand, if I understand what Uncwilly said:

the DEP point is a go/no go issue. To make this point clearer, as soon as you've evidence of more than a few iterations done on a specific box, DEP is not part of the troubleshooting. And installing the latest 24.11 build will wipe out this eventual doubt.
