Whoa, no increase at all in clock speed until at least June 2005! Is Moore's Law almost finished?

And it's only 3.6 GHz. Ugh.

If, for example, a manufacturer puts a cluster on a chip (and, as far as I can tell, there are plans to do just that) Moore's law will be followed even if each cpu runs no faster than its predecessors. Historically clock speeds have risen as device numbers have grown, but that's not what Moore stated. Paul |

I've heard that Intel plans to take a break in the "megahertz rush", and concentrate on building of dual-core processors.

This was an interesting video to watch regarding processors design http://lang.stanford.edu/courses/ee3...-ee380-100.wmv It was posted on another topic by someone but I can't remember where...

There was an article on Slashdot recently, http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...&tid=118&tid=1
There are some interesting comments in the discussion. Apparantly Intel has hit a brick wall with increasing clock speed, they couldn't keep power consumption and thus thermal dissipation under control. Cranking GHz ever higher was the fundament of the P4 Netburst architecture and Intel's marketing - they maneuvered themselves into a dead end and are frantically looking for a way out. Alex |
