I'm just curious... is there anyone out there that specializes only in Trial Factoring?

It depends upon what you are trying to trial factor. If you want to trial factor Mersenne's, then Prime95 is the program of choice. If you want to trial factor numbers of other forms, then there are program available. NewPGen sieves numbers in the form k*2^n +/- 1 (and others). Fermfact seives numbers in the form k*2^n+1 for ranges of k. Multisieve sieves numbers in the form k*b^k +/- 1 and n! +/- 1 (and others). And there is also proth_sieve that sieves k*2^n +/- 1 for multiple k as opposed to one k or a range of k.

Actually, I was thinking is there anyone who participate in GIMPS and perform only Factoring part of this project?
I ask that because recently I start to perform only Factoring part of GIMPS, so I was wondering is there anybody else that do that. Last fiddled with by edorajh on 2004-07-04 at 07:31 |

Thanks Luigi!
I'm aware of LMH, but I'm more interested in Trial Factoring as part of GIMPS project, with PrimeNet credits involved and everything. Edo |

Yes, there are a few people who do that. Do a forum search for factoring 100 CPU years or look at the top 100 factoring report and see if you find any familiar names. But I'm pretty sure there are at least two forum members who only do TF.

I only do TF, only did a few LL/DC when I started and didn't understand the types of work.
Look at http://mersenne.org/primenet/ftop100.txt Anyone who only has a couple of years of LL P90 CPU yrs is mostly or only doing TF. |

Great!!! Then I'm not the only one that will crunch only TF. I actually set up new user account only for TF work. My first account was for LL work. So, if I stick long enough with TF I will have plenty of years in Factoring and 0 in LL in my new account. :)
I'm also interested what is the reason that people choose to do TF only? My reason is because it takes less time to perform TF then LL. Also, I have more opportunity to feel excitement of discovery when I find factor. Although it's not as exciting as if I discover new Mersenne prime, it's frequent enough to substitute that. It's like exchanging lots of small excitements that are for sure, for one big excitement that is of very low probability. That's my reasons.
