I'm sure I'm missing the point here - can somebody explain why everyone seems to want to have an email account where the the stated intention is to scan your mail and target you with ads?

I don't know why other people want one, but there are 3 main reasons why I want one.
1) It is new, I always like to try out new things and see if they are any better than what I am currently using 2) The 1 gig email storage. I am currently with hotmail and I am forever deleating messages that I would have rather kept for future reference. Also, now people can actually send me a file bigger than 2mb. 3) Bragging rights that I have one. (ok, not really a good reason, but you should see how jealous some of my friends are that I have got one.) |

Fair enough. It's just that here in the UK we get watched by CCTV cameras in the street, the speed of our speed of our cars is monitored by unmanned cameras and now somebody is offering a product that will keep all your emails (possibly even the ones you thought you'd deleted) and link you email address to your browsing habits. When I first read "1984" I thought that it was preposterous because you couldn't possibly monitor everybodies behavior.
That was before a security guard approached me in a mall because a CCTV had spotted me sitting on handrail instead of a bench and before I got my first speeding ticket from a robot. These guys raise some questions that I'd like to see answered before I use (or even respond too) a Gmail account. |
