This has to do with activation. I learned that if I was not logged into my "store" account, activation became problematic. This was with some older versions. I do not know how it is now. My last upgrade was a patch-over of what was already there. 1903 => 1909.

v1909 kept freezing on me for no apparent reason. Sometimes it would run for two weeks, other times it would freeze every two or three days. I couldn't find a reason for this since there was nothing in the event logs.
Since I updated to v2004 on June 16, this has not happened. I haven't had any unexpected stops with this version. The update took a long time, around two hours. |

I had a restart required update two days ago. v1909 18363.900 is the current. I reset the defer dates to as far out as I could make them. I have learned to never jump into something totally new for a period of time. As long as I can stay away from v2004, I will.

I'm not encouraging anyone to update; just to let you know that I applied the July 14 patch with no issues.

Another which was suggested is disabling manufacturers updates for hardware. Window Update made a mess of my Nvidia drivers a couple of years ago by using a substitute. I prefer to do this one by hand with drivers from Nvidia. |

We want to tell Windows that way:
Bad Windows! Do not use my expensive paid-by-KB connection (wink) to do updates! I will tell you when I am on an non-metered connection (which I never will, muhahaha). |

Yeah. Such a shame that it has to come that, where we have to resort to fighting MS with such tricks.

It seems to me that MS took off in a different direction after Gates left, and possibly before, as he began to reduce his involvement. Their last stable OS, out-of-the-box, was Windows 7. I do now know about 8.x. I have never used it.
Windows 10 was a mess from the get-go. I ran the v17xx series for a few months and quit. There was always something every day presenting a problem. I skipped the entire 18xx series. I ran Widows 7 Pro for 15 months. I decided to try again when v1903 came out. I never had any problems with it. Now, it is v1909. Still, no problems. It is a shame that more knowledgeable users, like many here, are aware of the little tricks MS now uses to "spy." The average Jack's & Jill's of the world have no idea what goes on in the background. About MS: I would like to find the individual(s) who came up the .Net Framework for programming and force them to eat a very deceased and sun-ripened dog. |
